Her eyes widen and she bursts into laughter. “You are so bad. I walked right into that one, didn’t I? I do that a lot.” Her smile is huge as she shakes her head.

If I could make her laugh all the time I would. She’s so carefree when she does.

“I couldn’t resist. You make it too easy.” I return the smile.

We finish our sandwiches in comfortable silence, and I check my phone. I haven’t received a call that I need to get back to the restaurant, but I don’t want to be gone too long either.

“I should head back,” I tell her, “let me walk you to your car.”

“Of course. You don’t need to walk me though. I’m only parked a few blocks away.”

I stand up and hold my hand out for her. “I insist.”

She stares at my hand for a beat but then takes it in hers, and I don’t let go. Intertwining our fingers like I’m her boyfriend and this is just another day, I let her direct us to her car.

“Thanks for earlier. I’m not going to lie though; I feel embarrassed that you caught me crying.”

I turn to her, stopping us in our tracks. “You have nothing to be embarrassed about. Sometimes we need a shoulder to cry on. It’s good to let it all out.” I raise her hand to my lips and press a light kiss to the back of it. “If it makes you feel any better, this second date of ours isn’t the worst date I’ve been on.”

We continue walking. “Second date, huh?”

“Yup.” I don’t leave room for argument. This is definitely our second date. “Believe it or not, I once had a date shit her pants in the middle of dinner. And like the gentleman I am, I gave her my button-down to wear as a dress out of the restaurant. That was the last time I saw her.”

She once again bursts with laughter. “That’s awful, Lucas. Poor girl. I would never show my face again either.”

“I even offered a second date. She didn’t respond to me though.” I shrug and grin.

“I don’t blame her. And I don’t think this qualifies as a second date by the way. The first date was barely a date.”

“I’m definitely claiming today as a second date. You can’t change my mind. We hugged and held hands, that’s basically second base.”

“I think your idea of second base and my idea of second base are very different.”

“Oh yeah? Enlighten me then.”

We reach her car and I take the keys from her hand and open the door for her. I don’t give her the chance to slide into the driver’s seat just yet, tugging on her hand to bring her closer to me.

“Are you going to tell me or keep me in suspense?” I push a stray strand of her wavy pink hair behind her ear.

She chews on the corner of her bottom lip, and I use my thumb to release it from her teeth.

The blush I love so much rises to her cheeks. “From what I’ve heard, second base is above the clothing touching…but more intimately.”

“From what you’ve heard?” I ask in confusion.

“Thanks again for today. I owe you.” She plants a quick kiss on my cheek and pulls away from my grasp. Before I can process what’s happening, her car door shuts, and she takes off.

I think I’m still in shock as I watch her pull out of the parking lot because I haven’t moved a muscle.

From what she’s heard?

What the hell does that mean?

Has she never gotten to second base before?

But how could that be? She was talking about the dating app like she uses it for one-night stands.

Does that mean she’s a virgin? There’s no way, right?
