These questions, and more, plague my mind as I walk down the street.

I’m half a block away from the restaurant when my thoughts are interrupted by the sight of the mysterious man exiting the front door. He’s headed in my direction. I act as casually as I can, but when we make eye contact the hairs on my neck stand up. He doesn’t look away but smirks at me.

Like he knows something I don't.

I’m going to need answers soon.

My gut tells me this man is bad news.

What the hell is Emmett up to?

Chapter 10

Jordan

“Ifeel like we haven’t gotten to talk all week and I need the juice on all things Mr. Mission Impossible,” Penny begs as she pours us each a glass of two buck chuck. We just got Autumn to bed and finally have some time to catch up. I haven’t seen much of her because Autumn has been sick all week.

It’s Sunday night and the rest of the week went decently smooth, all things considering.

Lucas showed up to the coffee shop Thursday and Friday morning, and we fell into easy conversation while glancing at each other an embarrassing amount of times.

His little stalker stunt last weekend didn’t scare me as much as it should have, and I found myself searching for him everywhere I went the last couple of days. For some reason, I’ve been waiting for him to pop out of the bushes like a creep, but I didn’t see him at all this weekend.

“There’s nothing to tell. Although I may have run into him when I was downtown the other day.” I take a gulp of my wine.

Her eyes widen. “Did he see you withhe who shall not be named?”

I shake my head. “No. Worse. He saw me crying on the street after the fact. And I may or may not have completely broken down into his chest. Like full-on ugly cry.”

She cringes. “Yeah. That’s pretty bad. At least he’s seen the worst of you. It only goes up from there.”

“Hey!” I throw a pillow at her, wine be damned. “I’m a cute ugly crier.”

She laughs at me. “No, you’re not. But to be fair, nobody is.”

“Touché. Otherwise, the only other embarrassing thing I did was allude to the fact that I was a virgin.” I cover my face with my wine glass.

“You did what? What did he say? Was he into it? Or was he totally grossed out by it? It’s a fifty-fifty shot if the guy is into it.”

“Slow down.” I laugh. “I’m not entirely sure if he was into it or not. I think I shocked him silent. I high tailed it out of the parking lot before he could ask me any questions. When he showed up at the coffee shop the next morning, it was like I never said anything at all. Which I suppose is good.”

“Maybe he respects you?”

We eye each other and cringe. “Ew,” we say at the same time and burst into a fit of giggles.

“We can all appreciate a respectful man but not one who thinks our virginity, well your virginity, is some sort of sacred gift.”

I raise my wine glass and cheers her glass.

“On another note, is it safe to say you aren’t going to be using your dating app to pursue anyone?” she asks.

“Considering I haven’t had a match in almost two weeks, I would say that’s a no. Not that I’m on the app all that much anyways but I’ve swiped on a few people, and I checked the other day just to see, and nothing.”

“Wait, what? That’s impossible. Give me your phone.” She gestures with her free hand and scoots closer to me on the couch. “That’s weird. Especially after you had so many matches that first night. Let me check something.”

I wait patiently, topping off my glass.

“Holy fuck. What the hell is this?” She turns the phone in my direction.
