I’m silent as I look down at her.
“You think?” I ask.
“Yes, even if they don’t have four legs,” she teases.
I haul her onto my lap and turn her to face me, cupping her cold face in my warm hands. “I want children, two-legged ones, as you know. I want as many kids as you’ll give me. I realize that means we may need to find a bigger place than mine, but we’ll figure that out when we reach that point. But for now, I just want you,” I explain.
A smile spreads across her face, and her eyes search mine. “Good, because lately, I’m thinking that I want a lot of kids, definitely at least three or four,” she says.
I can’t help smiling back at her. “Oh? Not two?” She shakes her head. “I’m down for that. Glad we settled that small thing,” I state with a laugh.
She giggles and then frowns. “God, I’m going to need a new vagina if I have to give birth to your babies,” she says as she takes in my size.
“I’ll buy you one of those too if you need it,” I say as if I can do that. Can I do that? Hell if I know.
She laughs. “Good to know that my Viking will buy me new body parts if needed.”
“Come on, Cliff has had enough of us for tonight. I want you all to myself for a bit longer,” I say.
She doesn't move, though, and I look down at her again. “What’s wrong?”
She bites her lip and then speaks. “Do you believe me? About seeing my dad?”
Then it clicks. She thinks I don’t believe her. “Yes. I do. I just…I wonder if you are actually seeing him or wanting to see him?”
She nods slowly. “At first, I thought the same thing. But it’s happened so many times. It doesn’t make sense.”
“Could he be here? I mean, it’s possible, yes?” I say.
She nods again. “It is possible. I just…I don’t know why he’d be here. Like of all the places in the world, why’d he show up here in this neighborhood all of a sudden?”
“Guess we have a new mystery to figure out,” I state as I help her stand. I pull her against me as we watch Cliff eat. “We’ll figure it out, princessa. I promise.” And I mean that. I’d figure anything out for her. I’d do anything for her, well, except let her go.
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Jocelyn
Everyone is looking at me, and I blush.
“Well, did you two do the deed on our vacation or not? We need details and we need them now,” Roxy says as she holds her wineglass and leans forward.
It’s ladies’ night, and I’ve managed to keep whatever is happening between Hutch and me out of conversation for a full week. One blissful week of work, school, re-writing my paper draft, and spending nearly every night at Hutch’s apartment. When my mom questioned where I was going every night, I chickened out and made up some lame excuse that I was crashing in Roxy’s old apartment so I could focus on my paper.
Meanwhile, Hutch asked Kasen if he could try to track my dad down. Kasen is in the middle of some projects at work, but promised he would search when he gets a chance. Apparently, he had been waiting for me to ask ever since he helped find my dad’s family. He had found a few leads while looking for relatives, but didn’t want to dig unless I asked. Ever since meeting my father’s family, I’ve become more curious about finding him. If anything, maybe I do want to at least have closure between us.
I haven’t seen anyone resembling my father in a week. Thank goodness Hutch has kept me busy with other activities. That man hasn’t been out to hunt for the secret flower person all week. I feel like I’ve cured him of his obsession in less than seven days. Who knew copious amounts of sex was all he needed?
I sigh and lean back in the chair by the window. “Fine, yes. We had sex,” I finally blurt out because there’s no point in lying to my friends.
“I knew it!” Cam said.
“Same,” Roxy says.
“I thought maybe you all just made out,” Piper says, her cheeks turning pink.
“I mean, we did at first,” I admit. “But then…well, one thing led to another…and…you know.”
“We have to know. Did he break you?” Cam asks.
