Epilogue
Three weeks later
“Where are we going?” Faith asked.
Logan held her hand as they walked to the previous dome leader’s offices. “I have a surprise for you.”
“Really? I love surprises.”
Mary was standing in the hallway outside a room she had never been to before. “Everything is ready, Captain.”
“Thank you, Mary.” He turned to block the door and face Faith. “I know how much you miss me when I must go in to work and you have nothing to do in the quarters. So, I have a place you can come every day to give you something to do while I’m working.” He moved aside so she could enter the room.
As soon as she stepped in, lights turned on, and she gasped. Shelving lined one wall with art supplies ranging from large to small canvases, sketching pads, colored pencils, and all the paints she could ever need. They set ten easels up along the other wall. They arranged ten desks in a semicircle and in the center was another easel.
“Am I taking art classes?” she asked with excitement.
Mary peered through the open doorway and smiled. “No dear, you are going to be giving art classes.”
“What? Me?”
“Captain Coor has ordered your museum dug up and your drawings and paintings carefully removed.” She pointed to the other wall she hadn’t seen yet. There were her paintings she thought were lost forever. She looked at Logan with such love.
“You got them for me?”
“Of course. I also had what had been on the shelves brought in those boxes in the corner. You can decide whether you want them here or in our quarters.”
“I’m not sure I’m qualified to teach,” Faith said, walking over to her paintings.
Mary came in and stood next to her. “You are qualified. The classes are open to anyone in the subway or dome. We thought having a mix of people will help ease the tension between the two.”
Faith smiled and looked at Logan. “Maybe we could include some of the Drastan warriors as well.”
Logan smiled. “I’ll have Warrior Marque join your classes.”
They all laughed. Logan’s communicator lit up. “I’ve got to take this.” He stepped out of the room.
“So, are you up for this new challenge?” Mary asked Faith.
Faith nodded. “I am. When do we start?”
“Today, if you want. We have a group of fifth graders visiting the offices. You can talk to them about joining your class.”
“This is such an amazing surprise,” Faith said. She inspected the paints.
“It’s not the only one,” Mary said, pointing to the door.
Faith looked up and watched curiously as Logan and his warriors walked in with several boxes. Strange growls and scratching noises came from inside the boxes. She frowned.
“What’s that?”
Logan answered her. “We remembered you talking about pets and couldn’t remember which you preferred—puppies or kittens.”
They lowered the boxes to the floor. Inside were the cutest brown and white puppies, and in the other box were six black and white kittens. Instantly, she remembered her dream of her mother making pancakes in the shape of puppies and kittens. She answered the same way with tears in her eyes.
“Both.” She picked up a brown and white puppy with orange on his ear. He, of course, licked her face thoroughly, cleaning off all the tears. Then she found a kitten that had one spot of orange on its front paw and fell in love with both.
Logan took her in his arms. “Are you happy?”
