Chapter 38

Faith

She heard voices and noises that were familiar. Slowly, she opened her eyes and blinked at the white lighting of the dome’s medical clinic.

“Finally, she wakes up,” Felix said with frustration.

She tried to sit up, but a nurse was immediately at her side, gently forcing her down.

“Easy, honey. You’re still recovering. I don’t care what that sexy alien doctor says. You can’t just jump up fully recovered after all that blood loss.”

“You think I am sexy?” the Drastan medic asked.

The blond nurse rolled her eyes but gave Faith a conspiratorial wink. “All Drastans are sexy. You’re just one of the smarter ones.”

“I have a lot of knowledge. I could share some of that with you,” Medic Haggard suggested.

“In your dreams, alien.”

“You are in my dreams, often,” Haggard admitted.

The nurse and Drastan medic were flirting with one another. It was nice to see that human and Drastan relations were improving. Faith liked the Drastans she had met so far and hoped they would find love like she did. Where was Logan?

“Please get a room. If I must watch them flirting with one another, I’ll stab myself.”

“Felix?” she turned her head, looking around the nurse. Sure enough, her brother was lying on a bed about five feet away from her.

“Hey, Fay Baby. You’ve been sleeping quite a while.”

He was alive. Thank God and thank Logan, who kept his promise to save her brother. Tears sprung to her eyes, and she tried to wipe them away quickly. Felix didn’t like displays of weakness. She tried but everything she had gone through, the thought of him being angry with her, and then seeing him stabbed and bleeding all was just too much. She curled on her side and wept.

She heard shuffling and Medic Haggard cursing in Drastan. Then warm hands came around her shoulders.

“Easy, sis. Everything is going to be okay.”

She was so confused. Felix called herFay Baby, a nickname he hadn’t used since before the nukes hit. Then he called hersis. Also, something he refrained from doing since he rarely mentioned their familial relationship in public.

“Am I dead?” she asked.

He chuckled. “No, but we both look like death warmed over. How are you feeling?”

She struggled to get into a sitting position, but the nurse was back, shaking her head. “I’ll put some pillows under your head, but you are not to sit or stand yet.”

“Fine,” Faith grumbled.

As soon as the pillows were settled under her, the nurse turned her attention to Felix. “And you, get back in your own bed, mister.”

Felix grumbled, “Bossy women.”

He moved over to his bed, but before he got in, he dragged the bed closer to hers. The nurses rushed to help take the weight from him. They fussed over him until he was back in the bed, and they reinserted an IV. There was a hint of a smile on his face. He was enjoying the attention of the women.

Felix looked at her, and the smile disappeared. His expression was one of concern. “Let’s try this again. Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I just feel like everything around me turned upside down. I’m off balance.”

“I know what you mean. I had my opinions on these aliens, and I hate to admit it, but I was wrong.”

Another shocked expression crossed her face.
