Chapter 36
Faith
“Yes, dear sister. Surprised that I found you? Or worried that I found you conspiring with the enemy?”
She was shocked. Faith turned to face her brother, but Logan blocked her to protect her. It was sweet and frustrating. She had to lean sideways to look around Logan’s big, muscular body.
“What are you doing here?” she asked her brother.
“Trying to save my idiot sister. But I guess she doesn’t need saving, does she? I didn’t believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. Never would I have thought you would betray me or our tribe.” His voice was snarky and harsh. He had never spoken to her that way outright, but he had acted like she was a burden, and now she was tired of his poor behavior.
“I didn’t betray anyone,” she replied, trying to push Logan out of the way. He refused to budge and used his arms to keep her behind him. “How dare you accuse me of betraying you when you have done nothing but show me indifference and disgust for years. I’m sick of it!”
Felix moved farther inside with hurt and anger on his face. “Well, I’m tired of having to cover for your fuckups. You get caught and have been lounging around inside the dome, selling me out for what? New clothes, food, and fucking from an alien?”
Logan growled, stepping toward Felix. “You won’t talk to my mate that way. I don’t care if you are blood related, I will kill you where you stand.”
Faith grabbed Logan’s arm to pull him back, but he was like a damn boulder. “Don’t, Logan. Please.”
“He dared insult you. The one person who should protect you. He put your life in danger by letting you take part in that raid. You were injured multiple times, and he did nothing!”
“You were hurt?” Felix asked, looking shocked.
“He didn’t know.”
“He didn’t care! That other human took and tortured you. He did nothing!”
“Who tortured you?” Felix demanded.
“Please, Logan, we need to all sit and talk. I’m asking you to please…” she lost her breath and swayed. Logan caught her before she fell. He lifted her in his arms.
“Faith!” Felix rushed forward, concern on his face. “What’s wrong with my sister?”
Logan growled. “Ask your friend, Waller.”
“What does Waller have to do with this?” Felix asked, following Logan to the bench in the subway car. Logan lowered Faith to lie flat.
“He had two males inside the dome steal Faith. They took her to the subway and then he tortured her for several hours until she was nearly dead.”
“Why haven’t you done anything to help her?” Felix asked. “She needs a doctor.”
“I have my medic on his way now. I just found her. She escaped Waller.”
“This has to be a mistake. Waller was at a gathering of the local tribe leaders for the past two hours.”
“Lies. He went to the meeting to give himself an alibi,” Faith said, coming awake. She tried to sit up but Logan placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, pressing her back down.
“Don’t sit up. Just rest.”
Faith looked at her brother with anger, frustration, and sadness. “The Drastans are here to help. Everything that Waller has been saying is lies.”
“You are brainwashed.” Felix refused to believe her, but there was a hint of doubt in his eyes.
“I have never lied to you. I followed every order. I did everything I could to support you as the leader of our tribe. Until now, I have not asked you anything. Listen to Logan. He came here to find out what was happening with the raids, but also what was happening within the domes.”
“You’re letting your nether regions cloud your judgment.”
Logan moved to strike Felix, but Faith placed a hand on his arm. “I’m listening with my heart. Maybe you have no heart anymore. But I do, and Logan has gained my trust and won my heart. I won’t have you speak of him or our relationship like it is a dirty thing. He’s saved my life twice now. I don’t expect you to trust him just because I said you should. I’m asking you to give him a chance. Listen to him.”
