“We found traces of blood that did not match the human soldiers or any of our warriors.”

“Did the database match up the identities of who was involved?”

Powers shook his head. “Not yet. But we will find them. It’s a matter of time.”

He noticed Faith wrapped her arms around her waist as if she was trying to retreat into herself. “Are you cold?”

“N-n-noo,” she answered in a chattering voice. It was a lie, and they all knew it.

“I need a blanket now!” Logan ordered.

The three of them searched the back of the truck until they pulled a scratchy blanket out of a bench storage. Logan knelt in front of her and wrapped it around her shoulders.

“I apologize. This is all we have available.”

“It-t’s f-fine. Grreat.”

Her eyes looked dilated, and she was paler than before.

“Captain, she looks like she is about to lose consciousness,” Warrior Powers said from over his shoulder.

Sure enough, her head tilted down, and her body slouched, almost falling off the bench seat. He scooped her into his arms and held her while he took his seat. She felt right to him. He wouldn’t mind holding her for the rest of their lives.

“Captain. Did you find out anything about her people?”

He shook his head. “She was unconscious much of our time together.”

“Is that a human thing? Or a female thing?” Lake asked with concern.

“I believe it’s a subway dwelling thing. She and her people are in much worse condition than we were told.”

“That would explain why they would take such a risk to raid the trucks.”

“Yes, it would. But the use of weapons is my concern. How did they know about the shipment of weapons? How many do they have? What’s their goal for using these weapons?”

“Do you suspect an uprising?” Warrior Powers asked.

“Frankly, I’m surprised there hasn’t been one already,” Logan admitted. “Stay alert for anything unusual.”

“We will, sir. What about the girl?”

Logan glanced down at Faith’s innocent expression as she slept in his arms. Fainting shouldn’t have made her stay unconscious this long. That protective feeling rose in him again.

“I will question her in our quarters after she is treated for injuries in the medical facility. Once she is feeling better, I believe she will trust us enough to give honest answers.”

“What if she refuses to cooperate? Will you give her over to Dome Leader Winstead and his soldiers?”

He growled low. “Never.”
