Chapter 8

Faith

Fear spread through her like wildfire. She had hoped her presence would be ignored. But as soon as they left the safety of the subway, she was pulled to walk between her brother and Waller. It was the most uncomfortable she had ever been in her life. Felix clenched his jaw and kept his eyes averted. It was his way of trying to keep his emotions in check. If Felix was this worried, then things were bad.

They came to a sudden stop. When Waller turned to face everyone, so did she. There were more than just the two tribes there, but she couldn’t tell how many. It was dark and the wind was picking up the sand and making it hard to see.

“Each of your tribe leaders have the details of what you should do. Go and take your places.”

Faith tried to follow Felix and her tribe, but Waller took hold of her arm. “Not you, precious. You’ve got a different job.”

Felix glared at Waller. “She’s clumsy and a liability. I can take her place.”

“You don’t fit the bill. We need someone who doesn’t pose a threat as a distraction for the driver. She is a distraction, a pretty one.” Waller ran a finger down her cheek.

Faith couldn’t hold back the disgust and jerked to try to free herself.

“Let go of her!” Felix growled. The sound of guns being cocked filled the air, then silence hung heavily in the darkness.

Waller’s people were circling them, ready to fire on them. She glanced up at Felix and knew this could turn ugly if she didn’t do something. Taking a deep breath, she moved closer to Waller.

“It’s okay, Felix. I can do this.”

Felix looked down at her. “Be careful.”

“I will. If things go wrong, I know the meeting spot. I’ll be there.”

“You better be,” he said. Then he stormed into the darkness.

“You know, you should switch tribes. My tribe could use fresh blood and flesh.”

“Just tell me what I need to do.”

“Come with me. I’ll talk while we walk.”

He gave her no choice, pulling her along with him. “You will get the truck to stop before it reaches its drop-off point.”

“How?”

He ignored her question. “Once the truck stops, the driver will get out to check on you.”

“Why would the driver get out?”

Again, he ignored her question. “Keep the driver’s attention on you. That will give our people the time they need.”

“Time for what?”

Waller had enough of her questions and stopped to slap her face. “You will do as I have told you or it will be your brother who will be punished for your disobedience. Do you understand me?”

All she could do was nod.

He smiled maniacally at her. “Good girl. You need just one more thing.”

She didn’t ask what that was. Her face stung, distracting her so much, she didn’t catch what he was doing until it was too late.

He gripped the button-up shirt she wore and pulled until the top buttons popped off revealing a good amount of her cleavage.

“Hey!” she tried to cover up, but he swatted her hands away.
