“Sir, it’s a female” came from the driver.

Were these humans so desperate, they would endanger a female? The few human females he had encountered at the dome were flirty, soft, and delicate. They had also been a little conniving and aggressive in trying to get his attention. Still, he would not be responsible for injuring a female if he could help it.

He focused on the spot where the human was on the ground in front of the truck. Logan watched as the driver got out of the truck and gently helped the female until she was standing once more. Her back was facing Logan, but she turned to glance behind her nervously. Even from this distance, he could tell she was a small thing, barely five feet tall. The driver towered over her. That bothered him for some reason.

“Sir, we’ve got movement behind the truck,” the surveillance expert reported.

“Team Two, move in slowly but do not engage until they breach the truck. Team One, hold your positions.” He was stationed with Team Three. It was not his preference; he would’ve rather been on the ground to take up the first line of defense if something happened.

A loud popping sound came from the back of the truck. Logan stiffened as he gave the order. “Team One, move forward.”

The driver turned and headed in that direction. The female screamed as another body ran forward from the dark and tackled the driver. The second human lifted something long and metal striking the driver on the side of the head. His driver went down. The female screamed.

“Teams Two and Three, move!” Logan called out. As the humans on the roof with him rushed down the stairs, he simply stepped off the ledge.

The fall was invigorating. Then he landed making sure to bend his knees. That was a lesson he learned as a young male who loved to jump off tall things. Always keep your knees slightly bent to soften the impact. He stood and checked his weapon on his side holster.

The wind started to pick up, moving the sand, blocking visibility.

“Team One, report!”

No response.

“Team Two report!”

“Sir, we got turned around in the sandstorm. Team One is down! Repeat, Team One is down!”
