Chapter 5

Logan

“How many shipments have been stolen?” Logan asked as he reviewed the reports given to him.

“Two last month, one each month previously. A total of ten shipments.”

“Ten in the last fourteen months?”

“Yes. They strike randomly.”

“It doesn’t seem random. It looks planned.”

The colonel frowned. “How so?”

“The first one or two may have been random. But look closely at the following two shipments skipped. They were nonessentials. The next two shipments hit were either bringing food or weapons.”

“That’s interesting.”

Logan frowned at the lack of concern from the colonel. The male knew more than he was letting on and the officer struck him as someone who liked to know exactly what happened under his command. He was about to question the colonel further but was interrupted by a knock on the door.

“Enter!” the colonel yelled out.

Mary entered, pushing a tray of food and drinks. “I apologize for the interruption, but the refreshments are here.”

“You can spread everything out on the conference table.”

“Yes, sir. Also, Lt. Vasquez called to say that the quarters have been arranged and will be here shortly to take them there.”

“Very well. I have another meeting I must attend this afternoon. Mary and Lt. Vasquez will see that you and your men are settled. Tomorrow there will be a tour of the facility.”

The male was just going to leave. Unbelievable. “We’ll skip the tour. I will need to meet with your security detail to go over the next shipment that will be delivered tomorrow night.”

The colonel stopped what he was doing and looked from Logan to Mary. “What shipment? I am unaware of a night shipment coming here.”

“It’s a special arrangement to help with this investigation.”

“Shipment of what exactly?”

This was where things would get tricky. “It’s a replacement shipment of weapons. Right now, I want no one outside this room to discuss the shipment other than it’s coming tomorrow night.”

“Why?”

“Those are my orders. I must determine whether someone inside the dome is assisting the thieves.”

“None of my people would do that. It’s those subway dwellers that’s the problem.”

“We’ll do a process of elimination then. But I require your cooperation on this.”

The colonel shook his head. “I don’t like this.”

“We can leave and let you tell your president and my commander why you did not cooperate.”

The colonel’s face turned a strange red color. “Fine! Mary, see to their needs. I’ll meet you in the morning here with my security team.” Then he stormed out of the room.

The female looked pale and nervous. Logan gave her a gentle smile. “Mary, the food looks delicious but I’m unfamiliar with some of it. Could you tell us what it is?”

She breathed a sigh of relief and gave him a bright smile. “Of course. We have finger foods. Sandwiches and little cakes.”

“Your people live off this?”

“We usually have three full meals a day. This would be considered a snack, something we eat in between meals.”

His warriors downed the small food in no time. He glanced at the female. “We may need another round.”

She laughed. “No problem at all, Captain.”
