Chapter 6
Faith
The next afternoon, Faith and Nox walked the subway tunnels together discussing art and books. Nox was a big fan of books. He had a stash hidden under his bed and was planning to take half of them to the museum to share with Faith.
“What’s going on?” Faith asked Nox as they walked toward where Felix and another tribe leader stood by a fire pit. The sun was setting soon, which usually meant everyone was settling down for the night. Why were they gathering?
Nox looked around them and frowned. “Looks like we may be doing another dome run.”
“How do you know that?” Cary asked, running to catch up to them.
“There’s weapons being handed out.”
Oh shit!
Faith looked at her brother and watched as he then Rooster took weapons from the other tribe leader. Until now, the other tribe had their backs facing them. As they approached slowly, she recognized the tribe leader as Waller. He had the worst reputation of all the tribe leaders, very violent but also extremely smart. Whenever he planned a hit on supplies, it always went through without any problems. His people followed him without question.
Felix looked at them and put up a hand letting them know to hold where they were. He kept his expression neutral, but she knew him well enough to read the tension in his face and body. Something fishy was going on. Faith and Nox waited quietly for Felix to approach them. Rooster followed closely, right on his heels.
“What’s going on?” Faith asked her brother.
“Waller has information on a supply shipment coming in the next two hours.”
“At night? That’s unusual,” Nox commented.
“I know but Waller has always been right about the shipments.”
“Why the weapons?” Faith asked.
“There are Drastan warriors visiting the dome, so there could be issues.”
Faith had a really bad feeling. “We should wait until the aliens are gone.”
That was another weird thing about her new world. Aliens had come to Earth to supposedly help. But the tribes she knew of never even saw these aliens or the help they had proclaimed to be providing. However, Dome Leader Winstead did benefit from supplies from these aliens.
She had never seen one of the aliens except from a distance. They were built physically like humans and usually wore a dark blue or dark gray uniform. They flew to Earth on silver smooth-looking fighter ships, but their main ship was orbiting the planet. Sometimes she wondered what it would be like to be up there among the stars. What would Earth look like? Would the damage from the nukes be visible?
“Faith! Did you hear what I said?” Felix demanded, taking her elbow and moving her away from the others.
“What?”
“I want you and Cary to go back to our sub car and wait for our return.”
“We have to help you.”
“No, I don’t want you involved in this.”
Suspicion filled her along with fear. “What aren’t you telling me?”
He leaned down and spoke quietly so no one else would hear. “I don’t trust Waller. He’s got another agenda.”
“The weapons?”
“Yeah. If it was a simple grab and go, we wouldn’t need so many weapons.”
“We should all leave. If Waller isn’t being straightforward with the whole plan, and you clearly don’t trust him, then we should step away.”
“I can’t skip this shipment. It’s too important.”
