Chapter 13
Drake awoke to find himself lying on the couch in the breakroom of the bail enforcement agency. “What the hell happened?” he groaned out.
“You got shocked unconscious, my friend.” Vic answered him as he leaned against the doorway staring at him intently.
“Damn, that was…”
“Lucky. You were damn lucky. Jinx didn’t have time to adjust the power. It was set to high voltage. If the three of you, Roberts, his girlfriend and you, had not taken the voltage together, one of you alone would have died.”
“Where’s Roberts now? Did he get away?” He tried to stand up but Vic came forward pushing him back down with a hand to his shoulder.
“He’s in lockup downstairs, awaiting the authority to come and get him along with his girlfriend. They’re in the same shape as you. I had the paramedics check all of you over. They said to not use quick movements, and that the three of you may need twenty-four hour observation in case of any complications.”
“Where’s Jinx?”
Vic pointed to the other side of the glass wall. Drake winced as he shifted and turned to look out of the breakroom. He spotted her pink hair swishing against her back in a long ponytail. Her back was to him, and she was sitting on a desk surrounded by four male bounty hunters. They were listening to her as she told some story using her hands to reenact the tale. They laughed at what she was telling them, and he felt a sharp stab of jealousy. He wanted to snag her and drag her off somewhere so that he could have her all to himself.
“Drake? Are you hearing me my man?”
He turned to Vic reluctantly, hating to take his eyes off of her. “What?”
“I’m asking if you have your assessment of her completed.”
“Not yet.”
“She completed your case for you tonight.”
“Yes, but she got lucky.”
“Really? It sounded like she kept her eyes on the mission, while you had your eyes elsewhere.”
Drake felt heat rise to his face. “I was doing my job. If I hadn’t been there, she could have been hurt. What if he had a knife or a gun?”
“If she passes the assessment, she will eventually have to face dangerous situations like that.”
Drake could hear the concern in Vic’s voice. His eyes narrowed on his friend and boss. “Why did you give me the responsibility of training Jinx?”
“I couldn’t do it, and neither could Jagger. We would be sure to fail her assessment on purpose, and she would be furious and hurt with us. But if you, a stranger…”
“If I failed her assessment, she could be furious with me instead.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, Jinx has a will of iron. She’s determined to do this. Nothing any of us say will stop her. If we fail her assessment, what do you think she’ll do? Settle for being your receptionist?”
Vic sighed and ran a frustrated hand through his hair avoiding his horns. “She’ll go to another bail enforcement agency.”
Drake nodded his head. “Yep, she would.”
Vic and he shared an understanding look before they both gazed out the window to look at the object of their frustration. Vic cleared his throat. “I hate to admit this but she has a talent for this. Her ability to learn things easily like self-defense and handling a gun and the fact that she won’t give up until she completes a task are all the things that make a great bounty hunter.”
Drake didn’t say anything, he didn’t have to. Jinx had proved that she at least deserved a chance to do this. “She’s not ready to send out alone yet.”
“I agree. I won’t feel comfortable until she has clocked several missions. Should I partner her up with someone else?”
Drake’s hands clutched tightly in fists with the thought of any of those other males working one on one with Jinx. “No, I’ll continue with her for now, but I want someone else to do the final assessment of her.”
“Why?” Vic asked his eyes narrowing on him.
