I just wish I knew what it was.
“Faith?” Dae-hyun pondered this. Then his stare shifted to Sever. He strode over to my husband.
“What are you doing?” I nearly screeched.
Dae-hyun lifted his ax.
“No!” I screamed.
The ax fell.
I kept screaming, only without words. My world crumbled. My heart stopped. I hovered over the precipice of a void. Sever. No. I could feel insanity reaching for me.
Sever grunted.
I opened my eyes.
My husband had a new wound in his thigh.
“He was healing too fast,” Dae-hyun said.
“You fucking son of a bitch!” I snarled even as relief bloomed in my chest. “I'm going to obliterate you. No, I'mgoing to cut you into little pieces, feed those pieces to you,thenobliterate you!”
“Obliterate?” Dae-hyun asked. “You didn't mention that as one of your powers.”
“It's not a power, you moron. It's a threat.” I bared my teeth at him.
“Ah, I see.” He went to another of Star's guards. Antaura. Star's ex-girlfriend.
Antaura met my stare. There was no pleading in her eyes but there was a certainty. We had a history, and it wasn't a good one. She expected me to let her die.
“Really?” I asked her. “You think I'm that petty?”
Dae-hyun looked back and forth between us. “Are you rivals of some sort?”
“Is that your question?” I shot back.
He chuckled. “No. My question is this—how do I become immortal.”
Antaura cursed.
I went still. “I truly don't know the answer to that.”
“Are you sure?” Dae-hyun lifted the ax.
Then I felt something brush against my hand. I didn't dare look over my shoulder, but the light touch turned into one more substantial. And then my manacles fell away.
Anu?I asked in my mind.
God didn't answer. Not in my mind.
Instead, Extinguisher Connor Teagan whispered in my ear, “Get that motherfucker, Ambassador,”
Holy fuck. In a way, it was Anu. He had sent me Connor. And Connor—bless that bilocating bastard!—had freed me.
Unfortunately, I couldn't make good on my earlier threat. No feeding pieces of Dae-hyun to him before obliteration. Antaura's life depended upon me acting quickly. Dang it.
“Seren?” Dae-hyun prompted. “Tell me now or I will kill her. How do I become immortal?”
