The Raltven nodded.
“I don't know how long it will take to find this magic-user,” I said. “But the King will remain here until that happens. If any of you could help me investigate, I would appreciate it.”
“We will all keep our eyes and ears open,” Diyak said with a heavy look at the room. “And those of us with the skill,”—he set his stare on several Raltven who made a living by collecting information—“will put that skill to use for His Majesty.”
“If you find the culprit, there's a bag of gold in it for you” Cyn declared.
As grins spread over faces, I added, “You must offer proof that they are the magic-user we're after.”
Those grins turned into smirks.
I pulled out a gold coin and handed it to Sinna. “Tonight, drinks and dinner are compliments of the King!”
The Midnight Clan cheered once more, and Sinna grinned the biggest of all.
Chapter Eighteen
Cyn and I went back to our table and enjoyed a bowl of stew with some freshly baked bread for dinner. The atmosphere was jolly despite the seriousness of the situation. Free alcohol and food could do that.
“Thank you for purchasing food and drinks for everyone,” Cyn whispered to me. “That was kind of you to say it was from me.”
“The gold is from you.” I winked at him. “And Raltven do better when you show your appreciation through tangible goods.”
“I'll remember that.”
“Besides, you paid for everything we bought today, so I kinda owe you.”
“You owe me nothing, Ru.”
After controlling my blush, I said, “The offer of gold was smart.”
“I'm relieved it didn't offend anyone.”
“We are proud.” I nodded. “Raltven don't take handouts. But you offered payment for an important job. There's no offense to be taken there. The food and drinks tonight are just a thank-you for the sanctuary they’ve offered. Again, no offense to be taken.”
“More ale, Your Majesty?” Sinna asked as she came up to us with a jug.
“Yes, please,” Cyn said. “The stew is wonderful.”
“Thank you. I made it myself.”
“You're an excellent cook.”
“Thank you, Sire.” Sinna blushed as she refilled the King's mug, then filled mine as well before hurrying away.
Once our meal was over, the information gatherers approached, each one asking detailed questions about the poisoning, the Chelli, the shooting, and more. Questions I hadn't thought to ask. But then, this was their specialty. They left with confident nods. Huso and Neb were not among them. They had already asked all the questions they needed answered. But now, they had more incentive to go hunting.
“If there's anything to be discovered, they'll find it,” I said.
“I imagine they will.” Cyn smiled at me. “Thank you, Ru.”
“For what?”
“For bringing me into your world.”
“My world seems to like you.”
Cyn looked around. “I didn't expect to feel so comfortable here. Or so welcome.”
