“Look, I’m sorry, but I’ve just got out of a long-term relationship. As you can imagine, I’m not really looking for any other ‘company’.”

“Okay, but keep me in mind for when you get back on your feet.” She presses a kiss to my cheek, winks and walks off.

Fucking hell. You want female company and no one is interested, you don’t want anything to do with them, and they start fucking circling.

“Well, that was… just awkward as fuck. Honestly, it was hard to watch.” The dickhead tries to keep a straight face but I can see that he’s struggling not to laugh at his own joke. What a dork!

“Shut up.” I groan as his mocking laugh finally breaks free.

“Lord knows how you managed to land Katie. Are you seriously off now?” he sighs.

“Yeah. I’m sorry, I know I’ve been shit company this whole evening but I can’t watch anymore of that.” My eyes are pointedly staring out onto the dancefloor, never having left Katie.

“Of what? Oh…” He follows my gaze to catch sight of Katie stumbling drunkenly as she ‘dances’ with Gabby and my sister. I can’t stomach watching her punish herself like this. The alcohol she’s consumed alone has me edgy, but now she’s going to make a fool of herself and feel like shit tomorrow. And there’s not a damn thing I can do, so instead, I think it’s best if I leave now.

“I’ll see you at the gym on Tuesday, yeah?” I nod to his question as I neck the rest of my beer and throw the bottle into one of the recycling barrels.

I turn, grip his hand, and we pull each over in, slapping each other’s backs. “Thanks for coming, man.”

“No problem.” I give him a final nod before turning and walking away. I don’t bother stopping to say goodbye to anyone else, I’ll see them all soon enough anyway. I’ll have to remember to send Gabby and Sam a text today before they leave for their honeymoon.
