“I know, but I still feel bad. I should have told you the truth.”
I kissed his forehead and tugged his arms away from my body. “You live and learn. I’m sure you’ll do better in the future.”
“I will,” he promised.
“Good. Then let’s clean up and get breakfast. There’s a lot of work to be done.”
Sammy groaned, but he didn’t protest when I got out of the bed. It took him a minute to join me in the bathroom, and when he did, he was holding a set of shorts and t-shirt. “Tomorrow can I have a jammies day?”
“Absolutely. And if we work really hard, maybe you can try them on for a little while before work tonight.” He bounced up and down. I loved making him smile again when I’d worried that I had ruined the moment earlier. It seemed incentives worked for this particular little boy.
“I’ll work the hardest ever!”
“I’m sure you will.”
