“Whatever, man.” Dee rolls his eyes. “Nix, let’s go. I have to get home and ice my ribs.”

They hop out and I pull into the garage. An unknown emotion grips me. Fuck. I’m not used to this feeling.Get your shit together, Maverick. I gather my composure and head inside, finding John waiting for me in the kitchen.

“Maverick, a word please.”

What the hell does he want? I have zero fucking patience for his bullshit right now.

I follow him into his study.

He settles in the Victorian-style leather chair behind his mahogany wood desk. “Have a seat.”

“I’ll stand.” I stuff my hands in my pockets.

“Very well.”He slides his cell phone across the desk. “Your behavior is unacceptable.”

I peer at the screen and see the video of the brawl playing. This will have all the tongues wagging at school on Monday.

“Still keeping tabs on me, I see.”

“It’s for your own good.”

“MGM Grand-worthy.” I smirk just to piss him off. “Don’t you think?”

“This isn’t a joke!” He slams his palm on the desk.

“I beg to differ. It’s fucking hilarious.”

“I warned you to stay clear of her.”

“And I told you to fuck off.”

John opens the drawer to his right and brandishes a 9mm.

“Am I supposed to be afraid?”

“You will not make a mockery of this family.” He aims the barrel at my chest. “I’d rather see you six feet under than have little nigger grandchildren tainting this bloodline.”

“Pull the trigger.” I cock my head to the side. “I dare you.”

Sweat breaks out on his forehead and he trembles.

“Well, what are you waiting for?”

After a few moments, he places the gun back in the drawer.

“That’s what I thought. The next time you point a gun at me, you better use it,” I say in a deadly tone and leave the room.

Snickers and whispers reach my ears the moment I step out of my car. Figured I’d be the hot topic today. Most likely, every student has seen the video by now. The dirty looks and speculations continue as I navigate the hallways.

“Oh my God. There she is.”

“How can she show her face?”

“Cocoa’s a super skank.”

“The entire Louisville High football team ran a train on her at the party.”

“I heard she’s a prostitute.”
