“He didn’t push me. I just lost my balance,” I reply, yawning.
“Take a rest, baby, you need it. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
I nod. I don’t have the strength to stay awake. I feel more tired, and I close my eyelids, just for a minute.
I don’t know exactly how long it’s been, but the bedroom lights are dimmed when I open my eyes. When I look to my left, I see Danny asleep in the chair with the computer on his lap.
I smile at the sweetness of this scene.
Slowly, I get out of bed, take the blanket that the nurse brought me, and walk over to him. I take the laptop off his legs, put it on the bed, and then cover Danny with the blanket.
He smiles, and I’m fascinated.
He’s so relaxed and calm. His face looks angelic. With his lips slightly parted, I’d like to kiss him.
I approach and kiss him on the forehead. “One day, everything will be different, and that day I’ll be yours forever,” I whisper to him.
He moves, and I walk away. I don’t want to wake him up.
I get back into bed. My back still hurts, and so does my head. I take the laptop and start reading the central notes for a chapter. I correct some of them by adding notes here and there. Then the words begin to flow.
I put a sign with my name and start writing.
I begin to see the first rays of sunlight from the window, and I notice that I’ve written at least four pages. I hope Danny doesn’t mind.
“Good morning, babe.” He stretches, opening his eyes. “You should have woken me up and not covered me.” He looks at me sleepily. “How long have you been awake?”
“For a couple of hours, I think. You’re adorable while you sleep.” I smile.
Danny gets up and goes to close the door. He approaches the bed and kisses me.
“Now it’s a good morning. You don’t know how many times I’ve dreamed of kissing you as soon as I wake up. How are you?”
“I’m fine. I want to go home. I hate hospitals.”
He walks away to open the window while the nurse enters the room.
“Mrs. Lawrence, good morning. In a few minutes, the doctor will come to see you and have you sign the discharge papers.”
“Thank you, I can’t wait.”
The nurse smiles and leaves the room.
I get out of bed and go to the bathroom to wash my face and teeth and fix my hair. I look like a scarecrow, and I’m very pale.
I hear Danny talking to someone and slowly walk back to the room. My back still hurts, and so does my side.
“Mrs. Lawrence, good morning, I’m Doctor Hewitt. I don’t know if you remember me. How are you feeling this morning?”
“Just Hailey, please. Of course, I remember, even though you were blinding me with the light. My back and side hurt. Otherwise, I feel good.”
“You have a cracked rib. I believe that’s what is hurting you. I see you’re pregnant. Congratulations. I’ll prescribe painkillers that are compatible with your current state. They won’t be that powerful, so they’ll take effect over a longer period. This is why I ask you to rest as much as you can. If you feel pain, cramps, or blood loss, come here immediately.”
“Or course,” Danny answers in my place. “I’ll make her stay in bed as much as possible, doctor.”
“Great! Now I’ll proceed with a short visit. Then let’s do an ultrasound and see how your baby is.”
Danny says he’ll find something to do. I know for sure that he doesn’t want me to feel uncomfortable, and I appreciate it.
