Oh, my God. Jasper Hammilton, the most annoying and sweetest doctor in the world. He saw me grow up, and because he was my neighbor, he knows me quite well. Despite being only ten years older than me, he has always seen me as a little girl.

“Hi, Jasper. What do you mean?” I ask, worried

“Didn’t you know you were pregnant?” he asks incredulously. “Based on the HCG, it seems you’re quite advanced with your pregnancy.”

“No,” I reply, almost silently. It’s not possible. A baby? Now?

Jeremy gets excited and hugs me.

I burst into tears, and Danny understands precisely why.

“Congratulations, guys. I can’t wait to meet this little one,” says Danny. I can’t imagine what this news is doing to him.

The doctor clears his throat. “You must be at complete rest for at least three days. Then come back for a check-up.”

“I’ll do that. Thanks, doc.” He winks at me, and I smile at him. Then he leaves.

Jeremy walks away, saying that he needs to make an urgent call.

I’m alone with Danny, and I can’t stop crying.

“Shhh, baby, it’s alright. We’ll find a solution. Everything will be fine. Just rest, and you’ll see that you’ll be fine.”

“I’m sorry,” I say between sobs, and he hugs me.

“Nothing has changed, darling. I love you even more than I did before. If he lays one finger on you, I’ll lose my mind. Zoë will come to stay with you. At least that way I’ll know that you’re protected.”

“I can’t take her away from you, I’ll be fine. We’ll be fine.”

“You’ll be fine only if he disappears from your life. Please, I need to know you’re safe, and I can’t come and stay with you myself.”

I smile at the idea of having him at home with me.

“This is how I want to see you,” he says, stroking my face.

Jeremy returns to the room. “Unfortunately, a problem has arisen, and I have to go back to Chicago. I’m calling my mother to keep you company.”

“I prefer to be alone.”

“Hailey, don’t talk nonsense.

“Jeremy, don’t worry. I’ll stay with her,” Danny says.

Jeremy and I look at each other in disbelief. Then he smiles. “Sure you don’t mind?”

“Absolutely. Plus, I can take advantage of it to work a little.”

“Perfect, thanks. Then I’ll go,” Jeremy says. He kisses me on the forehead and leaves.

“I thought he would object to leaving his wife alone with me,” Danny says in a mischievous tone.

“He must go back to his lover.”

“What? Hailey, I don’t understand.” He’s speechless.

“His assistant, aka his lover. And before you ask me, I don’t have real evidence. Tonight we were close to having them fuck during dinner.”

“And you told him. Is this how you fell down the stairs? Or did he push you?”
