I was admiringmy handy work of putting the last headline in the book when the phone rang. I set my coffee mug down and walked to the cordless phone that sat on the kitchen counter.
“Hello?”
No one said anything right away. I swear I could hear someone breathing. I took a few steps toward the fridge, mindlessly pacing.
“Hello?” I tried my greeting again in case it was just a bad connection, but still there was nothing.
I shrugged and tried one more time before hanging up.
“Is anyone there?”
As I pulled the phone away from my ear, I heard someone sniffling, then the breathing grew heavier and more labored. My heart started to race.
“Hello?” I said again, knowing someone was there.
“Pat-rick.”
I stopped walking when I heard Chase’s congested voice.
