“Try again!” I demand.
The Frenchman speaks to them, this time without yelling.
“They are saying that you need to let him go if we want to live.”
“He’s thereasonwe are alive. Tell them we will release him when they pull away from us.”
He delivers the message, and they start talking among themselves.
“What are they saying?”
“I don’t know. They are talking in a dialect I don’t understand.”
They seem to have made a decision and resume the conversation with the Frenchman. “Okay. They’ll back up. I told them we will release him with a life preserver once we are a good distance away.”
“That did it? Fuck.”
“Well, I also told them we were being followed by the authorities,” he adds.
“That would do it. Nice one, Bedouin.”
“Are you ready for a fight?” he asks.
“Fuck yeah!” I tighten my grip on the gun as I say so.
They back up, and the Frenchman throws the life preserver on the water.
“As soon as you let him go, they will open fire,” he warns me.
“I’m counting on it.” I push the guy toward the edge of the ship, and he trips and falls flat.
Fuck.
They open fire immediately. We both run toward the bulwark and take cover behind it. The Frenchman has his back against the barrier, ensuring his body is well hidden from the incoming fire. As I crawl closer to him I notice something rolling on the deck.
That’s my earpiece.Fuck.
Until now I hadn’t even noticed that I dropped it. I run to take it, and as soon as I put it on, I hear Rage’s furious voice,
“SARAH! WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?”
“Everything went to shit!” That’s all I can tell him at the moment. I need to focus here.
“That’s an understatement. I know you don’t know shit about boats, but let me tell you something. Holes in a hull equals bad, as in, you are going to sink. So you better do something about it. I’m not dying in this boat. Bitch. In fact–” Lifeclaims.
“We need to fire back!” The Bedouin yells as the bullets whistle above our heads.
“Wait for them to reload!” I say.
The guy has just picked a shotgun from the bags.
Bang!
I don’t hesitate.
Not even for a second.
I single tap him. My shot goes straight through his eyes and out the back of his head. His lifeless body tumbles back and over the edge into the water.
