Don’t answer me!

“Couldn’t have put it better myself, idiot,”Life butts in.

“I’m sorry, Rage.” I sob.

“Don’t. I get it. The stakes are high, and we’re all a little jumpy. Plus, I wasn’t fair.”

“What do you mean?”

“I chose to get involved. I don’t get to shove that in your face like that. But please, don’t cry, Sarah. I can’t take it.”

I wipe my face with the bedsheet. An awkward silence engulfs our heartfelt conversation.

“I’m selfish, that much I know.”

“What do you mean?”

“I want you in my life, Rage,” I finally confess. “I want you around, but I can’t give you what you want from me, and I don’t want to lose you either.” I cry.

Silence falls between us for a few seconds.

“Let me be very clear about something. There’s no way you’d lose me; it doesn’t matter how this ends. I’ll always be by your side. Got it?” I can picture him doing nothing in his office, lost in thought.

“Yes,” I say almost in a whisper. Why does he have to be this nice?

“What? I couldn’t hear you.”

“Yes! I got it!”

“That’s better, kiddo. Much better. Now get some rest. We’ll talk later.”

“All right. Can I get this thing off my ear for a while just in casethathappens again?”

“That’s a negative.”

I sigh. “Fine!”

His voice fades, and I hold my gaze into the dark window, wondering, what the hell I am doing here?

Chapter Twenty-Seven

CARTER

Aww shit!

Shit-shit-shit-shit!

SHIT!

“So, are you going to take the job or not?”

When I told Rage that I was skipping the morning shift at the office today because ‘I had some shit to take care of’, I never, fucking ever thought this would fall on my lap.

“You still haven’t told me why you want this done,” I question.

“Why are you asking? Doesn’t this go against your own rules?” Suspicion has crept into the man’s words.

The man I’m talking to goes by the name of ‘Daremo’, which roughly translates from Japanese toNo one, and he has just given me a shitty job.
