Carter goes to the door and opens it, waving at Rage to go outside with him.
“You can go. I’m not done here,” Rage says.
“I’m not leaving you alone with her,” Carter announces, but Rage stares at him with annoyance.
The tension in the air is tangible.
“I said, I’m not done here. Now, fuck off,” Rage insists.
“Hey! Hey! Stop it! If you want to help me, then start by getting along with each other, because I’m going to need you both to solve this.”
Carter doesn’t move at my words.
“I can take care of myself,” I say. “If you don’t believe me, ask Rage’s balls.”
“She’s right,” he admits.
“Oh, wait… you kicked him in the nuts? Oh, sweet, sweet revenge. I love you!”
“Okay, we get it. See you later, pretty boy,” Rage says.
Carter looks at me, shakes his head, and slams the door shut behind him.
I’m alone with Rage.
Completely alone.
“If you’re thinking about lecturing me on how I’m going to die over there, then save it. I know what is at stake here. I know that the rape chances are high and only second to being tortured or dead in an alleyway. But I’ve got some experience in one of those, so trust me I can take it.”
Rage stares at me, confused. He wants to know more.
“Experience? With what?”
“Torture,” I sharply reply.
“Torture?”
“I was locked up for three years in a shitty cell by a terrorist group. So I know a thing or two about torture.”
“Then, how did you meet Bruno?” Rage frowns.
“Hewasthe torturer,” I confess.
Silence.
Chapter Twelve
RAGE
I’ve killed a man in the name of the law. I’ve killed men in the name of my own law. I’ve done it for money and pleasure. I’ve fucked bitches without remorse, witnessed the biggest injustices ever and did nothing to stop them. I even killed my fucking brother, but never, and I mean, never have I felt chills like the ones running through my body right now. I have never felt this horrified.
“Torturer?” I take a few steps back, putting some much-needed distance between me and her. “What do you mean, your torturer?” I ask in disbelief.
“Bruno was a double agent for three years. He infiltrated the terrorist organization, and I was his prisoner,” she says with a cold-blooded expression which is exactly the one giving me goosebumps.
Fuck me.
I shouldn’t have gotten involved.
