In The Shadows
A manin a black suit loosened his tie as he dialed his employer. “Sir? It’s Hal.”
“Did you find it?”
“I got email records and research files from the supervisor,” Hal said. “Haven’t had a chance to go over it in detail but they should be of interest to you. I’ll send copies.”
“And the supervisor?”
“Dead. That should halt their progress.”
“What about Williams? Did you find anything at her place?”
“No. She must carry her laptop with her. Cops just arrived. One escorted her in. She knew we’d be here.”
“Follow her. Get her files and make her tell you everything she knows before you take her out.”
“What about the Flux offices?”
“We’ll find another way in. For now, focus on Williams. I want everything she’s got on that vaccine. Am I clear?”
“Crystal.” Hal put his phone away. He didn’t mention that Courtney had seen him before he grabbed the computer, that he had taken his mask off in the apartment because he didn’t like how it fogged up his glasses. She normally worked late; he’d been keeping tabs on her the past two weeks. He crossed the street to a restaurant and ordered a drink at the bar so he could keep an eye on Faith’s home. The bartender, donning a surgical mask, poured him a stiff martini. He sipped, his own mask pulled down to his neck, and waited, but she never came out. “Dammit,” he muttered under his breath. He was sure the cops snuck her out the back. Didn’t matter. He’d find her soon enough.
