“Anything else?”

“I had my laptop with me,” she said, tapping her bag. “I took it to work.”

“That might be what they were after,” Roberts said. “Since they took your friend’s.”

Faith checked her jewelry box.“Nothing else seems to be missing.”

“You said your friend saw the intruder?”

Faith nodded. “She caught him in the act.”

“And he heard her on the phone with you, telling you that she saw him?”

“Yes.” Faith’s mind raced toward what the officer implied.

“Did she describe him to you?”

“She started to. But then the gunshot…”

“I’m going to recommend you stay with a friend or at a hotel tonight. Anyone else live here with you?”

Faith shook her head. “I live alone.”

“This is now a crime scene. I’m sorry, but I can’t let you take anything out of the house.”

Faith realized Courtney was her only close friend in the city. She had no one to lean on in times of trouble. “Will I safe at a motel? Could someone follow me there?”

“It’s possible,” Roberts said. “We don’t know enough, yet. Suspects. Motives. In a case like this, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Hold on.” He reached in his wallet and pulled out a card.

“Until we know for sure these incidents are connected, we can’t give you a protective detail. I recommend you hire a bodyguard. Here, take this.”

Faith took his card. “Redmond Guardian Service?”

These guys are the best in the business. We work with them a lot. Give them a call. They’ll keep you safe.”

Faith’s mind started spinning as she tried to comprehend everything that had happened since Courtney’s phone call.

“Let’s wait for the detectives,” Roberts said. “They’ll have questions for you. When we’re done here, go to a motel. And make sure you go out the back just in case someone out there is watching us.”

Faith felt sick to her stomach. “Why is this happening to me?”

“You’ll get through this. Call the guys at Redmond.”
