My heavy eyelids closed on their own. My head dropped, but I jerked myself awake, squirming in the chair. I eyed the yarn in my lap and sighed. I couldn’t focus on crocheting and kept getting frustrated with a loop. I fought off a yawn, keeping my drowsy eyes on Sean. His heart rate seemed normal. Keeping away the yarn, I leaned close to hold his hand, stroking his bruised knuckles.
He had gotten shot because the man who had kidnapped me wanted to shoot me. But Sean had covered me, taking the bullet in his back and passing out.
He was wearing a bullet vest under his shirt, but the bullet grazed the edge of the vest and caught him in the shoulder. Sean passed out from the blood loss because it nicked a major vein. Thankfully, we had reached the hospital in time, and Cillian told me Sean was a hard-ass—his words, not mine—so he’d heal in no time.
I would believe it when I see it.
It had been two hours, but he hadn’t opened his eyes. It was half-past nine, and even though exhaustion made me lethargic, I wanted to make sure he was okay.
He saved me with the FBI, who had arrested all the people involved. I only knew that Sean had helped my dad by signing him up in a rehab, and he kept hired guards around my apartment to keep my mom, Noah and even Rory safe.
My eyes burned with tears, remembering what he had said to me before passing out. You’re safe.
He had a pale face and blood streaked all over his back. I didn’t remember the blood staining my jeans, top, and arms. Even now, the jeans remained caked with dried blood. My eyes swelled with tears when I looked at them.
The hospital door opened, and I turned around to see a figure stepping in. A lady with a worried expression on her face. I stood up from the chair when she went directly to the side of his bed and frowned.
“H-he is doing better now,” I said, feeling small in front of her even though I was taller than her. She had an air of power and grace that put me on edge.
She fixed a glare on me. “Better? In a hospital room?” She tsked and sat down on the chair I had occupied before. “My son has always been like this. A stupid fool in love.”
I swallowed, fidgeting with my fingers and wondering if I should leave them alone. I was about to leave when she stopped me and asked me to sit down beside her. I followed her command.
She eyed me, her eyes trailing over my clothes, and sighed. “He is stupid. My sun,” she whispered, patting his hand and turning to face me. I straightened up, my mouth dry.
Sean had only talked about his family in passing, his mom being nosy with his life, and dad working internationally. He always had a small smile whenever he talked about them, promising me I would meet them soon.
“You know Liza?” I blinked and slowly nodded when she continued. “She couldn’t handle the love Sean had for her. You see, he’s obsessive. Even when he was a kid, he took care of his things to the point of breaking them. Never sharing his toys and always keeping them in order.”
My eyes trailed down to her warm papery hand wrapping around mine. Why was she telling me this?
“If you want to be with him, you’ll have to learn to receive his love, Chelsea. Even when he gets like this,” she said, shaking his head at his unconscious body. “He had briefly talked about someone he’s dating.”
Her hand squeezed mine as she said, “I’m glad it’s you.”
I felt relieved at the warm look on her face and covered my mouth when I saw his fingers twitch. My eyes snapped at his face and found him smiling at us.This idiot.
“Amma,” he croaked.
My eyes widened when she pinched his cheek and smacked his hand. “Amma! Ow! I’m hurt!” He exclaimed when she yelled at him in a rushed voice, making her worry about him at her age and going around and getting shot.
“You still haven’t given me any grandchildren yet!” she said, smacking his hand again, making him groan and pout.
“Amma, I just woke up. Can’t you be nicer to me?” He whined, rubbing his arm.
I giggled, seeing them banter. After a couple of minutes, his mom left, scolding him once more.
“I like her,” I said with a smile before meeting his eyes.
“You dummy.” Tears welled in my eyes. I tightened my hold on his hand.
“I hate you,” I cried out, wrapping my arms around his neck. I kissed his cheek when he let out a small groan and decided to scold him once the doctors make sure he was doing okay. Standing on my shaky legs, I called the nurse.
Sean was pouting when the nurse checked his vitals. I stepped out of the room as his doctor went in, my vision blurry with tears.
