He shrugs.

“Why?”

“I wasn’t about to leave you alone after the day you had,” Ryker stares at me.

“Right, because my sister paid you to be here,” I snort.

He grimaces but says nothing.

“Is this the deluxe package? Taking care of the invalid during bodyguard duty?” I joke again, wincing at the pull of my stitches.

Ryker sighs. “Get dressed, then come downstairs. I’ll make breakfast.”

He leaves the room, and I suddenly feel the need to apologize, although I’m not quite sure for what.

???

It took me twice as long to get dressed because of - you know - not being able to raise my left arm. But that meant Ryker had plenty of time to whip up eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, and coffee.

The coffeepot is my first stop as I enter the kitchen, but Ryker swats my hands and tells me to sit down. He follows a second later with a steaming hot mug of caffeine.

“So bossy!”

“Yeah, well, you’re hurt, and I can’t have you re-injuring yourself.”

“Will that mean a demotion for you?”

Ryker snaps off the stove and whirls to face me over the island. “Let’s get one thing straight, Kitten.”

My stomach drops, and I nod.

“I’m not making you breakfast because it’s my job. As a matter of fact, you’ve made my job incredibly difficult the last few days. If I were a smart man, I would have told Celia where to stick her assignment and quit this damn job. But…”

Something changes in his eyes. It was so slight, like a cloud passing by in the breeze. But, it was there. And it causes my heart rate to pick up.

“But - what?”

“But, nothing. Eat your breakfast,” Ryker slams a plate down in front of me, then stomps out of the kitchen.

Okay, he doesn’t stomp. It’s more like he angrily glides out of the kitchen without his feet hitting the floor. I don’t know how he does it, but even when he’s pissed, he manages to move like a ghost.

The thought doesn’t entertain me as much as I hoped it would.

I make a face at my breakfast plate.

Suddenly, I’m not hungry anymore.
