“Careful,” Knox whispers over my shoulder.

“What?”

“Your face is smiling. I’d hate if you broke something since it hasn’t done that… well, ever.”

“Shut the fuck up!” I shove his shoulder and he stumbles into the fridge.

“Ass.”

Shrugging, I grab a cup and sit down.

EVERLEE - HOUSE OF THE DRAGON

Lizzy’shere!Ican’tbelieve I’m staring at her beautiful face! Not being able to talk to her over the last several days has nearly killed me. We’ve gone for days without talking before, but this was different. She didn’t know where I was and that’s what bothered me most. Her, worried about me.

“So which one was it?” she asks without hesitation as soon as we sit at the island.

“Lizzy.”

“I can guess.” She looks around at Knox and Jax. “Well, it’s definitely not grumpy.”

Jax cuts his eyes at her, but doesn’t respond.

“Was it you?” she asks pointing at Knox. “Or you?” She points at Callum, then Emmett.

“Going on a witch hunt?” Jax drones, looking completely unamused.

“So original. You would think for as old as you are, you’d have a better joke.”

He rolls his eyes, but he doesn’t leave. Instead, he picks up a paper and holds it in front of his face, and pretends to read. Maybe he’s reading, but I doubt it. Something about his body language and the fact I find it nearly impossible to concentrate when Lizzy’s around tells me he’s just using it as a prop.

Lizzy grabs my arm, mouth open wide. “You dirty whore.”

“What?” I don’t know why I ask. Lizzy isn’t the kind of person who you need to ask to talk. She just does. She holds nothing back, either. No filter. What you see is what you get.

“All of them? They all have that Everlee glow. Well, except for grump, which is probably why he’s a grump. Because he wanted to and didn’t.”

Emmett’s eyes cut at Jax, but he doesn’t speak.

When I look at Jax, I find his eyes peering over the edge of the paper at me. Watching me. My stomach flutters and my pussy pulses, so I shift in my seat a little. I can’t help but think he’s smiling, but I can’t tell. Maybe I’m hoping he is, so I have proof he isn’t as much of an asshole as he lets on.

“I’m not answering you.”

“You just did.” She shimmies her shoulders, “Yes, queen!!!”

“Is there something we can help you with? How did you find her?” Jax asks.

“Right. That. So after I went to the safe house and didn’t find Ev there, I was worried. Naturally.”

Naturally,Jax mindlinks.

I snap my head in his direction and he looks at me with a curious brow.

“I went to her place. Didn’t find her there. Ran a tracking spell. Couldn’t find her there. So I backtracked, hoping you may have gone back and when I was leaving the safe house the second time, I heard some people talking down the street, so I did what every good witch does and shifted into a cat.”

“Good call, since there are tons in the area.”

“Right! Oh my Goddess. I’ve never seen so many.”
