“You were with her all day. What did you do?”

“Nothing much.”

“Nothing much? For hours? You had to do something.”

“Why are you pressing this?” he asks.

“Sorry. Didn’t know if she had any more information on Everlee.”

“Isn’t that your- I mean, our job?”

“Yes. But we haven’t found her. We had the one lead, but she seems to have fallen off the face of the realm,” Callum chimes.

“What if-” I slap the table. “What if she has?”

“What?” the entire table asks in near unison.

“What if she’s in a different realm?”

“You don’t believe that, do you?” Jax asks.

“Well, possibly. She’d have to have someone at Helsgard to help her access the Bifrost,” Callum chimes.

Jax nods without speaking. “That would make sense why no one seems able to locate her.”

Emmett’s eyes meet mine with a what the fuck glance stamped across his head. He seems to have picked up on the problem at the table and is wondering why we aren’t fixing it.

“So, did you stay in Samara’s office all day, or did you go somewhere else?” I ask. I’ve never been great at playing the mental minefields like Jax and Callum are.

“You seem to be very interested in my day.”

“Well, you said you were going to tell us all about it when you got home, so I’m sure he’s just curious. You know how Knox is. Dog with a bone. Or in his case, seal with a ball.”

Idiot me, barks like a seal and claps my hands.

I regretted it immediately, but as if we needed any more proof that this wasn’t Jax, he didn’t say a word. It would have been a perfect opportunity for him to say something along the lines of ‘shut the fuck up’ or get up and leave in some over the top fashion.

“Well, she took me down to Infernus.”

“Oh my God. Did you sleep with her?”

“No! I mean,” he brushes his hair behind his ear. Hair that’s not there. Force of habit, I suppose. “No.”

“So then, what did you do down there? Isn’t it only sex rooms?”

“Well, she has the other room. You know.”

No, we don’t know. Well, not really. “Oh, right.”

“Can we please stop asking so many questions,” Emmett chimes. “I’ve prepared this meal and plates are empty,” he says, standing up to plate.

“One thing first,” Callum says, standing up. “Samara, you are uninvited in our house. Please leave.”

He chuckles, then pain contorts his face as the spell that’s been put in place makes it uncomfortable for him. “What are you doing?”

“Samara, did you think you could fool us? Where’s Jax?”

In a swirl of black smoke, Samara appears and gone is Jax. She has an evil grin spread across her face. “He’s alive, if that’s what you’re asking, seeing as how I can’t directly kill anyone.”
