“Directly?”
“Well, if you hang a bleeding werewolf up to dry, and…” she shrugs, “vampires or something else were to find him. Is that really my fault?” Her evil laugh echo throughout the room as she’s being pulled towards the closest door. “Neat party trick. Maybe I should do it on the room Jax is in, so you can see him dying but not get to him. It would serve you right for holding out on me.”
“We ar-”
“Oh, please!” she yells, throwing her hand in the air. “I know that little bitch is around here. You can hide her all you want, but are you willing to sacrifice Jax for her? I’m betting no. So just hand her over and you’ll get Jax back.”
“For the last time, we don’t have her. You’re welcome to check around the house, but since you’re on your way out, it may make it difficult,” Callum retorts.
“You may want to turn over every stone then, because you have about two days before he’s either drained of blood or someone else finds him. It would be such a waste if he were to die. Such a handsome body. Perhaps I’ll make him wish he were dead. What is a girl to do in that case?”
“You don’t lay a finger on him,” I fire.
“Oh, so possessive.” She cackles as she slips out of the house. “I prefer fava beans and a nice wine, for dinner anyway.” I follow after and slam the door shut.
By the time I get back to the kitchen, Everlee is already downstairs with a determination set on her face, and a fire in her eyes.
I hold my finger up. “You need to stop and wait.”
Her eyes widen like I’ve slapped her. “You can’t be serious. You heard her.”
“Yes, but we can’t just run in there without a plan. That’s what she wants. What she’s expecting. If we do that, she has the upper hand.”
Everlee is seething and her body is glowing with a light blue mist dancing around her.
“I didn’t think true fae were supposed to be violent,” I tease, trying to lighten the mood in the slightest.
“Well, being kind and benevolent didn’t work out so well for them the last time and seeing as how I’m the first in how many hundreds of years… I would argue retribution and forging my own path are allowed.”
We need to get her to calm down and see reason, not fly off the handle and endanger herself. I glance at Emmett, who cocks his head to the side, knowing what needs to be done, but doesn’t want to do it. He needs to use mind compulsion on her.
He steps towards her.
EVERLEE - LETTING THE SUCCUBUS OUT
Assoonasthedoor clicks locked, I leap down the stairs and stand in the kitchen. She has Jax. She’s hurt him. I knew he shouldn’t have gone. What the fuck was he thinking? What were any of them thinking? Did they really think she was going to wait idly by?
No.
She’s going to force their hand.
Our hand.
Knox walks back and sees me standing there, stopping in his tracks. “You need to stop and wait.”
Is he fucking kidding me right now? “You can’t be serious. You heard her.”
“Yes, but we can’t just run in there without a plan. That’s what she wants. What she’s expecting. If we do that, she has the upper hand.”
Rage boils through me as a heat dances across my body and my nails bite into the palms of my hand.
“I didn’t think true fae were supposed to be violent,” Knox teases, trying to lighten the mood.
“Well, being kind and benevolent didn’t work out so well for them the last time and seeing as how I’m the first in how many hundreds of years… I would argue retribution and forging my own path is allowed.”
Knox looks from me to Emmett, and I know what’s coming. I can read Emmett and he doesn’t want to do it. He steps towards me and I set my eyes on him and hold up my hand. “I swear to Helsgard, if you take one step closer to me, I will blast you backwards with my light.” I form the ball in my hand, causing him to pause and the others to take a step back. “I’m fine if you want to talk, but do not and I repeat do not, try to compel me. I’ll never forgive you.”
Emmett holds up his hands and takes a step backward. “Fine. Let’s sit down and enjoy this meal that I really spent time making. We will enjoy it and then we will formulate a plan. We will get him back.”
