The speed with which I’m moving doesn’t afford me the opportunity to open the doors gently. Instead, they burst open, nearly flying off their hinges.

I’m not prepared for what I find.

Callum is standing in a shredded white button down with his wings spread out wide to the side, staring out of the large bay windows. Scales of blue and gold shimmer in the late morning sun.

“Callum,” I choke out, skidding to a stop.

He turns around, his face unreadable.

Judging by his wingspan, I bet he’s a massive dragon.

“Where is she?” I spit out.

“Downstairs.”

I rush to the wall with the secret entry and nearly rip the book out of the wall and press the button.

“Don’t stop her yet.” His words are soft, wanting, as his wings fold in around him, hugging him.

My heart aches for him. They don’t understand. They should not relish in this moment. They should not want this moment. It’s fleeting until we can reverse the spell. They will understand later, even if they hate me now.

Eyes adjusting immediately to the dark, I leap down the center of the spiral staircase and land with a soft thud. I’m standing behind her in less than a minute, hand gripped on her hip and spinning her around.

“You need to stop,” I warn, skin itching, wanting the shift.

Her eyes meet mine, and there’s pure fire dancing in them.

Shit.

EVERLEE - LUXPHERA

Whatthefuck?Nomore use than a child? A liability? His words repeat over and over again in my head. I get it. I’m not the true fae they have known, but damn it. Give a girl some time. I can be.

The hairs on my arms stand on end and a tingle dances on my skin. My hands get hot and there it is. A light ball, the size of a pearl and growing.

Watch it.

Pour my rage into it.

The ball continues to grow until it’s the size of a melon. Instinctively, I throw the ball into the darkness and when it hits the far wall, it lights up the room.

Again.

Eager to prove them all wrong and show I have control, I stare at my hands, willing another ball to form.

But nothing.

“Damn it!” I shake my hands, staring at them. “Come on!”

Nothing.

If willing something to happen made it happen, then I would have the largest light ball known to fae. I have to prove to them- to Jax - that I can be useful.

Come on, light ball. Luxphera!

A spark of a light flickers in my hand.

Yes! Yes!
