“Come on Everlee. I will do whatever I have to, to make it up to you.”
“Fine.”
“Fine. Name it!” He answered excitedly.
“Go without sex for a year. No sex, no oral, no jacking off.”
“That’s impossible.”
“No shit. So is this.”
He shook his head. “But I dumped her for you.”
“Well, at least you seem to be breaking up with girls before you try to bang another one. That’s progress and I’m proud of you. But when I say there is literally no chance in hell of us getting back together. I mean it. Zero. Zilch. None. Nada. Zip. N-”
He held his hand up to stop me from speaking. “Fine. But I’m not giving up on us.”
“Sucks for you.”
“I’ll win you back.”
I pressed my forehead on the frame of the door, debating if I should say anything else before slamming it in his face. It was clear he didn’t know how to take no for an answer.
“I think she said no, buddy.” I heard a voice boom from down the hall.
I looked up and saw Jax sauntering down the hall in dark jeans and a navy blue pullover, looking like he just stepped out of a Calvin Klein ad.
“Who are you?” Dick asked, quivering a bit in his shoes at the Goliath of a man stalking towards him. The tattoos on his chest poking out just a bit.
“None of your concern.”
“Ev. I’m not going to leave you here with this stranger.”
“Seriously, what the fuck?” I couldn’t even control my outrage. Who did he think he was? I hated this about him, always assuming he knew me and what I wanted and what I liked. He had me fooled for a long time that I wasn’t good enough or pretty enough, or just simply… enough for any man to want me. I didn’t realize at the time, but he’d manipulated my life in such a way that I’d lost most of my friends, making my whole life centered around him. Fortunately, for me, Lizzy is a stubborn cuss who doesn’t give up easily. She gave me space, but was never gone. She always saw what a douche bag he was, and it took me until after he was out of my life for me to see the hole I’d gotten myself into.
“I know most all of your friends.”
“For the old me, but you know what I learned when you cheated on me. I learned that all ofourfriends were really justyourfriends. I had to rebuild my life. But you know what? I’m good with that. I learned I don’t need you or any ofyourfriends. I’m happy now. I feel complete and, more importantly I feel enough.”
Jax pushed past Dick.
“I knew I should have never come here. Wendy was good, much better than you.”
Jax looked at me and then at Dick. “You will not stand here and try to guilt trip her into feeling sorry for your weak ass. She doesn’t need you and the fact you can see that too is tearing you up inside to the point where you feel you need to belittle and degrade her. If you don’t walk your tiny timbuck, scrawny ass back down the hall, I’m going to help you and I can guarantee you don’t want me doing that.”
“You don’t scare me.”
“I’m not trying to scare you, princess. I’m merely just giving you a heads up, so when I lay my hands on you, you can’t say I didn’t warn you.” He took a step forward.
Dick looked between us uneasily, and all I could do was raise my chin slightly and look down my nose at him.
“You’re so going to regret this.” He mumbled before storming away.
“Doubt it, dickweed.” Jax said, slamming the door.
I did the super cliche thing and ran into his arms. He wrapped me in a bear hug and held me there for what felt like forever. “You smell good.” I said, pushing off him a moment later.
“I take it that was the ex Callum met?”
