Being with Lulu again is the best.

She grew since I last saw her.

I also can’t deny how much more relaxed she seems on the ranch versus the city.

But my joy at reconnecting with my little girl is offset by that shit ending with Haley.

Her expression…her blue eyes almost looked teary.

I nearly asked her if she’d be willing to blow up the whole deal.

But I didn’t want to ruin her plans. She doesn’t want something serious right now. She made that clear. I don’t want to mess with her head.

I’m lying on my back with my hands behind my head in my bedroom in our cabin. Can’t get Haley out of my head.

I reach for my phone.

And it rings.

I look at the screen, disappointed when Cathy’s name pops up.

Co-parenting isn’t for the faint of heart. We’ve both worked hard not to let our personal differences interfere in us doing the best we can for Lulu. And part of that is interacting as little as possible.

So this phone call is a surprise.

“Hey, Cath.”

“Hi, Liam.”

Silence.

“Everything okay?” I finally ask her.

“Yeah, I just wanted to let you know Phyllis and I arrived safely in Wilcox. From our video calls, Lulu seems to love it also.”

“She does.”

“And Liam?”

“Yeah?”

“I know you’re dating someone new. It was hard to avoid on social.”

“Cath…”

“I’m happy for you. Really.”

“I appreciate that. I do. But we’re not dating.”

“Really, you don’t have to pretend for my feelings…”

“I’m not. She and I were…it was a temporary thing.”

“Liam.” Her voice turns stern.

I always hated when she gave me her stern voice. It meant she was about to lecture me. Sure enough…

“You don’t do temporary. You’re either all in, or you’re all out.”
