“But I married somebody else.”
“I was going to reach my end point one way or the other. No apologies to Ben, but I would’ve kissed you when I felt like it was right whether he was in the picture or not. He made things a little easier for me.”
“I think I should be offended by this, by the fact you were basically lying in wait ...”
“There was no lying in wait. None of this was secretive. I have loved you from that first moment till now, and I’ve never wavered on it. We couldn’t be together for some of it for a lot of reasons. But I want to be now. I know you’re still married. I know it’s fast. But it’s not. If you think about it.”
She shook her head. “It’s not. I was emotionally unavailable to him because you had most of my heart. You were right. I was dividing it up so I could never lose everything. Well, now I can, Sam. If I lose you, I lose everything. You’re the only person I trust with my heart. With my tears.”
“Same goes, Nora.” He looked at her for a long moment. “I’m in love with you.”
“I’m in love with you too.”
Her phone started to buzz from somewhere on the floor. It must’ve been in her pocket. “I have to get that.” She scrambled off the bed and got onto her knees, pulling her phone out of her jeans and answering it when she saw Daisy’s name on the screen. “Hello?”
“Alexandra is awake.”
“Really?”
“She got out of surgery, and she ... she’s awake. Madison says that we need to go to the hospital.”
“Okay. See you soon.” She hung up. “Alexandra is awake,” she said, looking at Sam.
“I’ll drive you.”
“Thank you, Sam.” She leaned in and kissed him, then paused. “Sam, I did a love spell when I first started working at the apothecary.”
“What?”
“I did a love spell.”
“Well, if you’re going to try and claim this isn’t real because you did a love spell a month ago, I have some news for you.”
“No. It’s just ... I thought I wanted Ben back. But my mantra was that I have the love I deserve, and when I said it, I saw your face.” She looked at him in awe. “You were it all along.”
He leaned in and kissed her. “Nora, I know.”
“Am I the love you deserve, Sam?”
“No, Nora, I don’t deserve you at all. But I’m damn glad I have you.”

I thought he was too much of a coward to do anything half as dramatic as try to kill me.
Then he loaded me into the car and drove it out onto the road I would normally take to get home from a trip, and pushed it off the edge of the embankment.
I watched it all, hovering over my body.
Just like I’ve been hovering over my body since I was found and taken to the hospital. Watching who came to visit, including Christopher and his mistress. If he would’ve had the chance to pull the plug on me, he’d have done it.
I found out he was engaging in fraud. Tax fraud, wire fraud, you name the fraud, he was doing it, and I planned to use it to get a just settlement in the divorce. He decided he’d rather I was dead.
