“Oh, you brought company again!” She took a step towards us and paused, tilting her head. It reminded me of the way a wolf stilled when it scented something in the air. “Ah… I remember you, wolf. Dax, was it?”
That surprised me because I’d never formally introduced myself during our last visit. “How do you know my name?”
She gave a light laugh. “Ah, I recall that other omega wolf was talking excitedly about who would be the better uncle…”
When I realized she meant Sage, I was amazed that she remembered so much of a brief interaction.
“And once more,” Dr. Pine said, lifting a fragile finger, “prey and predator.”
Morgan straightened up beside me, sucking in a small breath. He murmured, “How does she know that? We’re in human form.”
The doctor swayed playfully while bracing on her petrified wood cane. “I know many things, dear. Or should I say, deer?” She chuckled. “Get it?”
If Sage was here, he would’ve laughed hysterically at that,I thought.
Morgan’s jaw dropped. Awe shined in his eyes. “I… I have to admit, I’m surprised you can tell at a glance. Most humans can’t.”
She giggled. “Most humans don’t live alone in a cave in the middle of a canyon, either.”
“She’s special,” Remington chimed in almost defensively. “She’s basically an honorary shifter.”
“Aw, aren’t you sweet?” She ruffled Remington’s fur and he leaned into it. With his ears plastered to his head in contentedness, he looked like a domestic puppy instead of a wolf. Admittedly, it was kind of cute to see Remington so happy.
“Now, you came here for a reason, I assume?” she asked.
I cleared my throat and stepped forward. “Yes, doctor. I have a favor to ask.”
Dr. Pine’s gaze slowly slipped towards Morgan and she nodded. “Your mate. Is that right?”
I nodded, quietly stunned that she knew. Although if she recognized Morgan as a deer even in his human form, I supposed I shouldn’t have been that surprised that she knew other things too.
“You wish to know if he’s with child,” she suggested.
“That’s right.”
“Very well.” The echo of Dr. Pine’s cane echoed in the cavern as she shuffled towards Morgan. He stood still as she raised a hand, hovering in front of his midsection. “May I?”
He looked a bit nervous. This was his first time meeting a human, so it was to be expected. I held his hand to reassure him and he blew out a soft breath of relief. Finally, he nodded at the doctor. She lightly touched his belly, which had no sign of showing yet.
Morgan’s expression went tight with anticipation. I caressed his hand trying to calm him, even though I was just as excited and worried.
I didn’t know what the doctor was doing except closing her eyes and holding her hand in place against Morgan. Was it just my imagination or was the wait taking longer than with Len? My excitement twisted, turning into fried nerves.
Hurry up!
“Hmm…”
I clung to Dr. Pine’s every word. She leaned back from Morgan, putting both hands on her cane and nodding.
“Well?” I asked, unable to take it any longer. “Is he pregnant?”
She faced me with a smile. “Oh, yes. Definitely!”
We were both shocked into silence. Then our elation exploded. I cried out and hugged Morgan as he laughed into my neck. I felt like I was floating on air.
“Dax,” Morgan said, his voice cracking slightly. “I can’t believe it.”
There were tears streaming down his face, but his eyes were bright and shining. I gently wiped them away but when they continued to fall, I let them be. I knew Morgan must have been overwhelmed by intense emotions. I was just glad they were ones of joy and happiness. After everything he’d been through, he deserved this.
