But now I have two girls screaming at each other, and a guy who looks beyond smug about women fighting over him. It’s causing a massive scene in the Kohls plus Sephora and I just want to melt into the floor.
“I missed, and I thought I could shoot again, but then I wound up hitting both of the girls and… oh my gods, Love, she just smashed a Valentino Color Flip against the other girl’s head.”
“It happens to the best of us,” Love lies with a wince.
“Has this happened to you?” I ask as the women screech and they pull each other’s hair.
“Ladies, ladies, there’s enough of JRod to go around,” the man says.
Love grimaces at both the name he calls himself and the situation. “No, but I mean, it’s not the first time thishas happened. The fundamental base of the generation we’re making the most love matches for is love triangles. It will be fine.”
“It will not be fine, Love. I should just go work as a caterer or find another job in Cupidale.”
“No, I know what we need to do.”
I’m about to cry again, even though I promised myself I wasn’t going to wallow in self-pity any longer.
“What?”
“Go stand in the home appliance section while I clean this up, and then we’ll go.”
“Okay.”
Love squeezes my arm and heads into the fray, where both of the women are being pulled apart by security. She’s un-tucking a reversal bomb from her back as she sets it off. A deep pink smoke fills the room and reverses any love matches made by love arrows.
She’s going to have to meet with the board of directors for using one of them. We each have one in case of an emergency, but they’re heavily monitored by the board. When a cupid uses them, they automatically have to go to the board and explain why it needed to be detonated. She should have had me use mine so I could take the blame, but she didn’t.
Gods, I don’t deserve this cupid as a friend.
“Love, we should have used mine.”
“I’m your superior. I’m training you. It will be fine. Don’t worry so much, Juliet. Plus, I’m Cupio
’s favorite. He totally won’t even care.”
“So everything with the love triangle will be okay?”
“Yeah, I mean, they might have to get bailed out of jail, but that builds character. They’ll be fine.”
“Where are we going?” I ask.
“The land of luck,” she says with a smile before grabbing my arm and ripping us through time before we land on a patch of wet, green grass.
“Where are we?” I ask, looking around at the lush beauty around us.
“Killarney.”
“Um, why?”
“I think it’s time you met a friend of mine.”
“Who?”
“Where’s the surprise in that? Stop being such a scaredy cupid,” Love teases, tugging on my wrist.
The air is crisp and fresh, lush green surrounds us as she drags me behind her. A loud whoosh of water fills the space as we approach a small cascade. It’s serene and beautiful. With each step closer to the water, my body loosens more until tension falls out of me.
“You’ll need this,” she says, handing me a golden coin.
