“What do you mean?”
“Toss it into the water and you’ll see. Just pop back to Cupidale when you’re done.”
“You’re just leaving me here?”
“Lady Luck only entertains one individual at a time. Toss your coin, and if she deems you worthy, she’ll make her presence known,” Love says before popping out of existence.
I rub the cool metal of the coin between my pink thumb and forefinger. Either Love is completely full of shit and messing with me, or there is an actual being who can help me change my luck.
What if all I need is a little magic to help me get out of this funk? Every day I see how cupid arrows change lives, and the magic is unexplainable. What if there’s a being who can help me—a cupid—find my way into not only helping others find love, but helping myself?
The air is chilled and welcomed as I look over at the small fall, and then down at the pool of water in front of me.
With a deep breath and a wish, I toss the golden coin into the slow-moving water. It splatters against the surface and nothing happens. Nothing rises from the water, nothing in the air seems different, and I fully think Love was fucking with me.
Maybe it’s some sort of cupid hazing, or a way for me to join their friend group. Either way, getting to be in such a beautiful place by myself is helping me forget the disaster that I just left a few minutes ago.
I’m about to head back to Cupidale when a gust of cold, brisk air hits my face.
Suddenly I see something move in the distance. I squint my eyes to see better and my feet move before my brain catches on. The ends of my wings drag slightly in the water as I reach the forest’s end.
There’s nothing but green, and the cackle of the cascade is still booming behind me.
“Ye summoned me?” a voice says in a heavy Irish accent, startling me, and that’s when I finally make out her figure.
Her dress is floor length and made of clovers, her skin a vibrant forest green sparkling with dew. Her hair is made of moss that is shaped perfectly around her heart-shaped face.
I bite my lip and find myself lost for words as she smiles. What is she?
“I don’t get many members of the veil looking for luck. I suppose that misfit Love sent you?”
“How did you know?”
“Ah, she stumbled across me one day and hasn’t left me alone since. Says we’re best friends. It gets lonely here sometimes, so I tolerate her.”
That brings a smile to my face. Love does have a way of forcing her love upon you.
“So, you’re Lady Luck?”
“Aye, the one and only.”
“So, is this like a genie situation?” I ask stupidly, and she laughs, her clover dress shifting with her movement.
“Not quite. Come with me, cupid,” she says, leading me back to the water where I’d dropped the coin earlier.
She plucks a clover from where two stones are kissing, and she inspects it. Smiling at the small plant before placing it on her lips, she closes her dark green eyes for a few moments, and I just watch, feeling both in awe and slightly awkward.
“Keep this on you at all times, and you might find that your luck turns around.”
“That’s it, a clover?”
She tucks the clover back against her chest. Maybe she can sense that I’m skeptical, and she narrows her eyes at me.
“Well, if you don’t want it.” Lady Luck shrugs and goes to add the clover to her overflowing dress.
“No, I want it,” I blurt out quickly as the being in front of me grins.
“It’s important to remember that it must be on you at all times. If you separate from the flower, you’ll no longer have the blessing of Lady Luck.”
