“I thought only cupids could come to the event,” I reply.

“It’s just a thought. And according to the bylaws, that is in fact, not true,” Amore says. I swear she knows everything when it comes to being a cupid. She’s a great friend to have, not only because she always takes my side but because she holds a mass wealth of knowledge.

I love her, and truly wish we were each other’s type, but alas, we are soul mates of a different form. Love comes in many shapes and sizes, and I’m honored to love her in such a comforting, platonic way.

“I’ll keep asking around,” I reply to her, as Eros and Juliet walk up to us through the crowded white meeting space.

I swallow and remind myself that revenge takes time. Simply shoving an arrow up his butt in front of everyone would likely get me fired, or worse. No, I’ve got to be smart about how I handle this. The last thing I want is everyone thinking that I’m acting out because he shattered my heart into a million pieces. No, he didn’t have that effect on me or my lady bits. Just my fragile little ego.

“Your numbers have been down this past week, Love. I hope I didn’t have anything to do with that,” Eros says with a toothy grin. Juliet laughs at his joke.

Asshole.

His jab doesn’t sting as much when I remember that I’ll no longer be having subpar sex with a narcissistic, misogynistic douchebag.

I give them both a polite smile back and tilt my head.

“No, I’ve just been very busy handling my own lust, if you know what I mean.” The lie flows off my tongue easily, and Eros’s face falls.

Good. Knocking him down a peg feels so fucking good. It’s probably not cupid or lady-like, but the idea of hurting his ego as much as he hurt mine lights a fire under me.

“Certainly not so soon,” he replies.

The smile on his face is one of a man who is a fraction away from losing his shit. I love it. Maybe I could make his head pop off.

“He had just been waiting for me to get back on the market. As soon as he found out I was single, he asked me out on a date. It’s been wonderful.”

Juliet clicks her tongue, her hand on her hips as her pink wings flare behind her. “That’s great that you found someone new, seeing as Eros and I are together.”

Part of me wants to pat her head and buy her a vibrator because there’s no way she’s getting off. Instead, I smile. I had to learn the hard way, and I suppose she has to as well.

“Exactly. He’ll be at the ball. You can meet him then.”

The lies just sweep off of me like they mean nothing but watching his face contort makes it worth it, even if I’m digging myself into a giant gaping hole I can’t dig myself out of.

“He will?” Amore says questioningly.

“He will.”

Eros bops my nose with his pointer finger.

“Good for you, kid.”

A dark part of me wants to tilt my chin and bite his finger off. I’d even swallow it so that he couldn’t magically attach it somehow. I know we’re immortal, so I’m not sure what the rules of dismemberment are, but I’m willing to find out.

Eros and Juliet walk away and I look over at a wide-eyed Amore.

“So what’s it going to be? Angel, ghost, or reaper?”

I grimace. “I guess let’s start from the top of the list and work our way down?”

“What if you can’t find anyone?” Amore says.

“Then I’ll have to find a way to kill myself.”

Amore belts out a laugh and shakes her head. “Listen, if you can’t find anyone, you can come as a triad with me and Doe.”

“Thanks, Amore, but I specifically said I was coming with a guy.”
