Lilith tosses her the man’s wallet and shrugs. “That should cover it.”
“Let’s get out of here,” Kas suggests, kicking the man one last time for good measure.
“I’m going to run to the bathroom, then we can portal home.” Kas nods, and Lilith walks in the opposite direction of me to go to the bathroom. I follow her every movement, watching how tall and regal she looks in her black dress and the way it swishes with every move she makes.
“I’m guessing I can count on you to take out the trash?” Kas’ voice startles me. I was too focused on staring at Lilith to even notice her approach.
“Yes,” I reply, looking at the man holding his wrist and sitting down at the bar.
“This isn’t healthy, you know?” she says as a pretty waitress with a tray hands her a drink. Kas gives her a lazy smile before turning back to me. “You’re only torturing yourself.”
“Didn’t ask your opinion.”
She sighs and takes a sip of her drink. “She’s doing better. She’s happy, she doesn’t talk about her sister as much.” Kas clears her throat. “If you want Beelzebub alive, however, you may want to relocate him to somewhere else."
“I don’t care about him.”
Kas rolls her eyes. “Do you know how much it would mean to her to hear you say that?”
“You said she’s happy?” Kas nods her head. “And as far as I can tell, besides general unwanted attention, no one knows who she is. She’s safer here.”
“Lucifer,” she sighs. “When I told you my idea, I didn’t mean that you needed to stay away forever.”
“I...” I shake my head as I almost forgot myself and confide in this demon. I shake my head and watch as Lilith scans the room looking for Kas. “I’ll take care of the werewolf,” I state flatly, walking away so Lilith doesn’t spot me.
I can’t believe I nearly told her the pathetic thought that’s been plaguing me for too long. That I want Lilith to want me, that if she doesn’t want me then what does it matter? Her safety comes before my singular want.
The werewolf is slowly healing at the bar. He doesn’t heal as fast as a demon or a vampire, but it is fascinating to watch his skin slowly graft back together.I’ll quite enjoy killing him,I decide.
I’m feeling a bit melancholy this afternoon with all that I’m depriving myself. But this—hurting this asshole—that is something I have control over. A variety of beings continue grinding on the dance floor, nearly fucking right before us as the werewolf stands. His movements are shaky as he holds his arm against his chest and leaves the club.
I follow him silently, and the sick jealousy that he got to touch Lilith is what has my feet moving. Lilith is it for me and there will never be anyone else—no one else can compete with destiny. But it appears that time is never on my side, and it won’t be on this motherfucker’s side either.
He startles as he attempts to put his key in the lock of his truck. “I could heal that, you know?”
“It’ll heal fine,” he deflects in a gruff voice.
“But wouldn’t it be nice for it to be healed immediately?”
“I ain’t trying to make no deal with a demon, fuck off.”
“Mmm, but you had no problems putting your hands on one? No?”
“Listen, man.” He spins around, looking up at me, and swallows thickly. “I think I paid enough for tonight?” he comments, holding up his arm that is still slowly oozing blood.
“Perhaps. But I’m feeling extra on edge tonight.”
I don’t let him respond as I extend my claws and rip into his chest, pulling out his overly large heart. It beats twice in my fist as his body transforms into a wolf one last time as he tumbles to the floor.
Like the organ has offended me, I drop it on the floor and tsk at his shifted form. He’s much more likable this way, and I sigh. “I’ll be seeing you shortly,” I say to his corpse.
There’s a pop of a portal as Ronan approaches, wearing all black. He clicks his tongue and looks down at the dead body.
“No offense, my lord, but I think you need to get more inventive with your kills.”
“Why fix something when it isn’t broken.”
He shrugs, and I clear my throat. “Have the angels been stirring up anything lately?” I ask while grabbing my handkerchief and rubbing my bloody hand on the material.
