He nods his head. “Anything I can help with?”

“What exactly do you know about covens?” His green eyes are shiny and his dimple is making an appearance again.

“I’m knowledgeable.”

“Hmm,” I say as I take in his response. I want help, but the truth is, I don’t really know Dax. So bringing him into this drama when I don’t know if I can fully trust him doesn’t seem wise. “I’ll take it under advisement.”

“Fair enough,” he says. The busboy comes and drops off our crabs and sides and my mouth waters.

This isn’t a hot way to eat in front of a guy you like for the first time, but Dax doesn’t seem to mind as we pick apart our crabs and eat quietly. The rain suddenly comes in and it hits the metal roof and drips into the lake. Our hands are filthy and Dax has a little Old Bay on the side of his face, but something about this date just feels more intimate than others I’ve been on. I’m not sure how that’s possible when the man refuses to give up any personal information.

We finish our meal, and the rain is still going pretty strong. There’s an outdoor sink and I go to wash my hands. Dax is suddenly behind me, his larger body surrounding mine as he washes his hands as well. This shouldn’t be attractive, but it is. “Thank you for coming out with me,” he whispers. Our hands interlacing and sudsy under the running water.

“Thanks for dinner.”

“My pleasure. Do you want to get ice cream before you take me to get my bike?” I turn around, grabbing a towel to dry off my hands. He has a smirk on his face. The way he worded it—giving me a choice, but there’s no way in Hell this man isn’t coming back home with me.

“That sounds great.”

Dax settles the tab and uses his bigger body to shield mine as we run in the rain toward my car. He still opens my car door and waits for me to get in until he gets in the car. We’re both wet in my Jeep and the windows are foggy when he leans over the console, gripping my nape with my wet black hair. The kiss is fierce and demanding. Dax isn’t asking for any permission. He just takes as his tongue parts my lips. I think that he’s going to touch me more, but the kiss continues. His tongue dominates mine and shows me who’s in charge. It makes me wet and needy. I rub my thighs together looking for friction.

Dax breaks the kiss, his dark hair wet and sexy. He smiles at me and winks. “Patience, pet.”

I want to beg, but I just stare at him for a moment, trying to collect enough brain cells so that I can turn the ignition on and get us home as soon as possible.

Chapter 10

OnceI’vecollectedenoughbrain power to start the car, I clear my throat and drive back to Hallowsdeep.

“Ice cream?” he asks in a voice. I know he knows what he’s doing to me. No man, or whatever he is, should be allowed to be this sexy.

“Seriously?”

“Rain is stopping, why not?” he says, smirking at me.

Why not? Because you’ve made my panties wet, and you need to do something about it. Instead of saying that out loud, I nod my head and give him a tight smile.

“Cauldron Cones?”

“I forgot everything in this town was Halloween themed.”

“You’ve been here before?”

“Yeah, a long time ago.”

I nod my head and don’t question him any further. I’m not sure why, but the idea of him bringing Ryan up makes my stomach hurt. Dax is payback. I’m going to enjoy every moment of it, but he can’t be anything more than that.

It’s dark, but the lights off Main Street are bright as we pull up to the ice cream shop. That’s when I see a mass of dark brown curly hair and I know its Clover.

“Fuck,” I hiss.

“What’s wrong?”

Who knows the next time I’ll get a chance like this. Dax isn’t human. I’m guessing his moral compass is a little off kilter, too. Maybe he won’t think I’m an absolutely deranged lunatic for proposing a kidnapping for a first date bonding activity.

“What’s your stance on abduction?”

“Like aliens?” He looks at me, perplexed. We live in a world with vampires and werewolves, if you don’t believe in aliens, you’re a moron. But, now is not the time to discuss life forms outside of Earth.
