He frowns and his hand stills on my thigh. Probably not the best idea to drop your daddy abandonment issues on a guy who hasn’t been the greatest father.
“He sent money, but he just couldn’t be a good parent, so he did the best he could,” I say, and Dax nods his head. I can’t stop myself from the word vomit. “It’s not for everyone, being a parent. I know it’s not for me. But shit happens sometimes. It doesn’t make him a bad person.”
“Blair, babe, take a breath.”
I do and exhale, giving him a smile. “Ready to go in?” he asks.
“Yeah.” I go to open my door and he tsks at me. So I wait for him to get out of the Jeep and walk around and open my door. I was going to hop down myself, but he grabs me by the waist and sets me on the pavement. Carly’s is in the middle of nowhere. It’s half indoors, half outdoors, with a massive awning to protect us from the incoming rain. Dax keeps his hand firmly placed on my lower back as we walk up to the hostess stand.
“Table for two,” he says and the woman frowns, looking down at her table chart.
“It’s gonna be an hour.”
Dax touches her hand and makes eye contact with her. “I’m sure if you look again, there’s an open table.” His words are soft and hypnotizing.
“Well, I don’t know how I missed that,” the hostess says, grabbing two menus and walking us over to the best table in the whole place. It’s right on a lake, so we’ll get to eat and watch as the rain comes in. Dax pulls out my chair and I take my seat, flattening my skirt under my ass.
Dax sits across from me and smiles. “Mage is still my top choice.”
He acknowledges my suspicions but doesn’t answer. “Do you want to get a dozen crabs?”
“That sounds good, hushpuppies and calamari, too?”
“Anything you want, babe,” he says, giving me a smirk. That fucking dimple makes an appearance and I nearly perish and fall into the lake. “You look stunning tonight,” he says.
“Thank you, you don’t look so bad yourself.”
He smiles and puts his elbow on the table, his jaw leaning against his fist. “You’re not like other witches I’ve met.”
“Cunty, or frolicking naked in the woods?” His laugh is loud and booming and it makes me smile at him.
“Fuck, you’re cute.”
The waitress comes to our table, and she looks a little too hard at my date. I really was making it a resolution to not hurt people who flirt with my date, but if she doesn’t stop soon, I’ll happily break that resolution. Luckily, she redirects her attention to me.
“What can I get you to drink, sweetheart?”
“I’ll have an orange crush, please.” She smiles and nods her head, looking back at Dax.
“I’ll have the same. We’ll do a dozen large crabs, calamari, and hushpuppies. Thanks.” We both hand our menus back to the server and she walks away.
“Is there anything you’re going to tell me about yourself, Dax?”
“Let’s see, I’m a Gemini, my favorite color is green, I hate oatmeal, I like baseball.”
“Very vague,” I say, as I play with the tablecloth in front of me.
“What about you?”
“Virgo, black, I hate my coven. I like my cousin Stevie.”
“What’s wrong with your coven?” he asks. The waitress politely sets our drinks down, and I take a hefty sip.
“More like, what isn’t wrong with them? They’ve depended on me financially for the last five years, and then they tried to sacrifice me a few days ago.” His eyes widen, but it seems almost like a forced reaction. Could he have possibly already known?
“What are you going to do?”
“I plan on getting some answers before I act.”
