“He still drives plenty of people crazy, you’re not alone. This is going to sting,” Diesel warns as he holds up some kind of antiseptic I’ve never seen before.

“I can handle—ouch!What is that?”

“Told you. This stuff is the real deal.”

I grit my teeth as he douses the scrape again.Godthatburns.

But just like I did when Caleb would see me take a fall on the ranch, I lock my jaw shut, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me flinch again.

“You fall?”

“Slipped.” I answer truthfully. “I didn’t feel the scrape until we were in the police station.”

I watch him work, studying the way his brows draw tight.

He’s fascinating up close. There are lots of small lines on his face like he’s squinted into the sun on the battlefield for years upon years.

There’s also a small scar that splits his left brow.

I want to stroke my finger over that spot, but I douse the desire, stiffening my spine.

“Three days of you watching me, and I never knew. That’s creepy as hell, you know that?”

He doesn’t look up. “It’s the job.”

“I deserved to know.”

His hands still for just a second. Then he reaches for antibiotic ointment. “This won’t sting.”

The ointment is cool, almost soothing as he applies it using a sterile gauze square. Diesel works precisely. Making sure every inch of the wound is tended.

“Why’d you takethejob?”

For a moment, I think he won’t answer. He starts wrapping gauze around my forearm, his movements efficient, practiced.

“Because Caleb called LSS and asked that they bring me in for the case,” he finally says.

I’m more confused than ever.

“That’s it? Because Caleb asked?”

“That’s enough.” He secures the gauze with medical tape. “Hold still.”

His fingers brush my wrist as he smooths the tape and as he does, his attention is laser focused on my trembling fingers.

I feel that look all the way to my pussy.

“Keep it dry. We’ll change it tomorrow.”

But he doesn’t move.

CHAPTER 11

She’s right there. She keeps glancing at my lips. I could kiss her.

Hell, Ineedto kiss her. It’s required for survival.

“What you said earlier…the part where you want me but don’t want to get in a train wreck, does that apply to kissing?”
