I asked as I pulled my clothes on. I reached for Sin and Caspian, and they were both asleep. It didn’t make any sense why we were getting up now.

“Because we’re taking you there first before Sin and Caspian come,” he said, giving me a smile. “It’s been a week since you’ve bonded to Caspian, and now that it’s settled, you’re finally going to be part of our pack, so we want to celebrate.”

As soon as I was dressed, he grabbed my hand, squeezing me too tightly.

Tension rose as he pulled me through the corridors without a word, his face hardened, only stopping when I stumbled before the steps that would take us away from the third floor. But he couldn’t hide his fear, and I didn’t want him to be alone.

I tugged at Caspian to find out where he was, but he didn’t respond. Even when he was asleep, he would unconsciously reach for me.

Nerves danced through me as we got to the ground floor and picked up speed.

“Kai, something’s wrong. What’s going on?”

“Don’t worry about it. You’ll find out once we get there,” he said stiffly.

He kept pushing, racing us towards the door that led to the basement garage.

“No, tell me what’s happening now.”

I struggled against him, but we were already through the door, hurrying towards the car that’s front doors were already open. Street light flowed into the large, open doors at the top of the ramp, and the uneasy feeling grew stronger.

“I can’t tell you because it’s a surprise. I don’t want to spoil it. Just get in the car, Brandy. Trust me, it’ll be totally worth it.”

How many times had they told me to trust them since our relationship had shifted into more than blind hate and suspicion?

Reaching out for Caspian again, I still couldn’t sense him. So I took a risk and tried to find Sin’s presence as Kai’s hands trembled in mine.

I didn’t know if I could even say that Kai wouldn’t hurt me. Everything he’d done recently showed that he loved me, but did that mean he wouldn’t turn on me if I fought him?

I slid into the passenger seat, and Kai threw himself into the car. As he started the engine, the locks clicked shut, and he switched it on.

The engine revved, and he grit his teeth. “Fuck!” he shouted as Caspian’s panic exploded through the bond, rocking me back in my seat.

I gasped out as a wall of fear hit me, twisting deep into me.

“I thought I’d be able to hold him off for longer,” Kai tutted as he slammed the pedal and we suddenly reversed out of the garage.

I threw a glance over my shoulder, even though it was obvious where we were going. And my gaze landed on the brown suitcase packed up on the back seat.Mysuitcase.

“Kai! What the hell is going on?” I cried out.

But it was too late.

The garage door to the house burst open, and Caspian stood there, drenched in sweat. But we were already at the top of the ramp.

He shouted as he ran after us, his words lost under another rev of the engine as Kai snarled and spun onto the road.

“Kai!” I yelled, but his foot was already down, and we soared along the street filled with parked cars on either side.

He let out a laugh, smacking the steering wheel as Caspian faded away behind us.

“Shit, I didn’t think we were going to get away in time,” he gasped as emptiness bloomed inside me. Kai forced love through the bond, trying to fill the space, but I instinctively knew it wouldn’t work.

“Kai.” My voice was low as I gripped the door. “What have you done?”

“We can’t stay there, Brandy. I promised I’d keep you safe, but I can’t do it if we stay in that house. Withthem.”

“Them—” I choked out. “They’re our alphas, Kai. We can’t just leave them.”
