“Well, okay, but I was going to say that I’m so hungry. Can we grab something on the way back to your place? My treat.”

Lukas looked at me like maybe he didn’t believe I wasn’t actually about to apologize when he interrupted and that my hunger was just a convenient cover story. And he might have been right. But that didn’t change the fact that I was suddenly starving.

“What do you want to eat?” he asked.

“I’m not picky. I just need food.”

“Chinese or burgers?”

“Oooh. Burgers. I have to warn you, that if you give me the option of getting a burger, I’ll seldom get anything else.”

“Doesn’t that get boring, though?”

“Burgers are never boring. They’re a whole meal in your hand. Carbs. Vegetables. Protein. Dairy. There’s so many ways to change them just based on the toppings and condiments you choose. And that’s not to mention the cheese and the bread. You could eat a burger every day and not ever have the same meal twice.”

“So you want Chinese, right?” Lukas smirked at me.

“Smartass.”

“I know a great place. Best burgers in town.”

We kept the conversation light as we drove across town to a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that Lukas loved that I’d never heard of before.

When we arrived, he shut the car off and turned toward me. “Did you want to dine in or get the food to go?”

“Burgers are best if consumed right away, but I don’t want to dine in.”

“Car picnic it is.” Lukas leaned across the seat and stole a kiss. “Did you want to come in with me, or did you want me to surprise you?”

“I think I’ll come in and order.”

I wanted to see the restaurant, but more than that, I wasn’t sure I could take any more surprises that day.

THIRTY

LUKAS

By the timeI got Sawyer back to my place, I’d changed my mind back and forth a million times about what I wanted to do. Was I really going to suggest what I thought about suggesting? The dust had settled after the whole Asher thing, and I was hesitant to stir shit up again.

“Are you ever going to tell me what you’ve been stressing over?” Sawyer asked as he dropped into a crouch to pet Lara, who’d groaned and heaved herself out of bed to come and greet him.

“It was just an idea. It was nothing. It’s no big deal.”

Sawyer looked up at me. “If it’s not a big deal, then you’ll have no problem telling me.”

“You’re younger than me, you’re not supposed to be wiser.” Taking a deep breath, I let it sigh out of me. “I thought, maybe it would help if you saw some of the uncut footage from a scene. To see what it’s really like. The finished product is a lot smoother than what really goes on.”

“Okay.” Sawyer surprised me by agreeing. “But I want it to be one of your scenes, if possible.”

“Are you sure?” I asked, worried that he’d be upset about watching me with another man, even though he’d always known about my job.

“It has to be you.” Sawyer stood and approached me. Slipping his arms around my waist he met my gaze. “It has to be you,” he repeated.

“It’s been a couple of years since I filmed, but I do have some uncut footage kicking around the archives. Should we pop popcorn and make a date of it? I can set it up in the living room and cast the footage onto the big screen.”

“Point me to the popcorn, and I’ll get it ready while you get everything set up.”

Sawyer’s pleasure was obvious in the way his eyes sparkled when he looked at me. He was actually enjoying the idea of watching old footage of me having sex with another man. How did we get here?
