“Sophie, baby, look at me.”
I shuddered. Did he just defend me? Against my sister? I knew he didn’t like putting hands on a woman either, so what he did shocked me. But not necessarily in a bad way. The truth was, I may have been able to defend myself by blocking whatever hit that was coming at me, but I would not be able to hold my own against her. I know. I’ve tried. You can’t fight crazy. And to be honest, I think I still expected Dom to choose her eventually over me.
His voice came out again, soft and gentle, the extreme opposite of what it had been a moment ago.
“Sophie, babe. I need you to look at me. Really look at me.”
I looked into his eyes, trying to focus. My eyes were starting to water, but I was trying to hold it back.
“Why did you just stand there when she was going to hit you?”
My lip quivered. I shrugged.
“Why baby?”
“I thought,…...I thought…...maybe she was supposed to be with you……..and not me……” Tears started running down my cheeks.
I could barely see him through my tears, his face a blur. He wiped the tears from my face gently.
I could hear the pain in his voice. “Nomi fiammetta.I want only you. Do you hear me?” He gently kissed my lips. He pulled back a little, but I could still feel his lips on mine. “I love you. You will always be mine.” Then he kissed me again, and pulled me into his embrace, wrapping his strength and security around me.
And for the first time, I said it too. “I love you too, Dom.” His hands around me tightened, like he never wanted to let go.
Chapter 13
Dom’s POV
The day had come to confront Don Sanchez. I was wired up on adrenaline. Maximo insisted on coming because apparently he wanted to confront the Don too…...on Aria’s behalf. Their union started out ugly and bloody, but Maximo had acknowledged he now held a high respect for his wife. She had taken down the Black Widow, a woman who had been going through multiple lower ranked mafia men, as well as a couple of less noticeable Dons. Aria had also survived an ambush at their home by that worthless shit, Nico Cattaneo. He was in hiding and will be next on our to-do list.
I had set up this meeting today with Don Sanchez under the pretense of talking business. Oh, I had plans to get some business done, but not the kind he was expecting. Maximo and I had had several of our men set up on the perimeters of the mansion, ready to go at a moment's notice if the Don tried to fight my proposition. To be fair, he would be pretty stupid to with Maximo present, but if I learned anything, never underestimate another person.
I had done that with Sophie from the start. And now, I was possessively in love with my wife. I hoped by now she was pregnant with my baby, but she hadn’t said a word yet. That just meant we had to keep trying, and I was all for trying. The womanturned me into a damned horny teenager whenever I was in her presence.
Maximo and I were escorted to the Don’s office. He had the door open and began to rise from behind his desk, a smug smile on his face. I knew he wanted this alliance for the sake of trying to get me, and possibly even Maximo, in his pocket. But this was about to bite him in the ass.
He stretched his hand out to me, “Ah Dominic, good to see you son.” He was a little too arrogant with how he greeted me, but I would let it slide. For now.
I kept a cool expression, and shook his hand tightly. “Emiliano.”
A flicker crossed his eyes, but he maintained his smug expression. He then turned to Maximo. “An honor to have you here, Maximo. I hope things are well with you after that hit on your home.” He tried to sound sympathetic, but he was terrible at it. He probably would have rejoiced if Maximo had been taken out.
In a cold tone, Maximo took his hand and gripped it. “Yes. Luckily my wife can take care of herself.”
Emiliano’s face twitched, but remained smiling. “Yes, your wife is quite the woman.” The way he said ‘woman’ was with a slight tinge of disgust. I could feel the heat coming off of Maximo. I knew he wanted to do something to Emiliano now after that comment, but he knew how to restrain himself. That’s why he was the best in our world. I personally wanted to throw him down on the ground and pummel the shit out of him for his treatment of Sophie and how he allowed Serena to treat her so horribly. With the way Emiliano was acting towards me, he obviously didn’t know where his other daughter was. He would soon find out.
We sat at his desk, facing him as he rested his hands on his lap, still smiling that smug smile. I was about to wipe it off his face.
“So what business are we talking about today, son?”
Son? I wasn’t his fucking son. Maybe legally by marriage I was, but that was all. This man was nothing to me.
I looked him straight in the eyes, and calmly said, “You will be handing over the reins of your clan to me today.”
The whole room went still. We had four men of ours in the room, the best, and he had six of his own. I could feel the tension building, as Emilaino’s expression began to shift to agitation.
His voice dropped low, “What the fuck are you talking about Dom?”
I continued to stare at him, voice still calm, “Did I say you could call me Dom?”
