David’s fists clenched. He’d never punched anyone in his life, but he really wanted to wipe the easy-going smile off Scotty’s face.

Megan must have realized what he was thinking. The warning glance she sent him was enough to stop him from moving forward.

“What a lovely family,” she said with a warm smile. “I wish I could tell you I know them, but I don’t. Do you have a contact phone number I could give them in case they come into the store? It would be a pity to leave without saying hello.”

Scotty looked over his shoulder at David.

“Don’t mind me,” he said with false cheerfulness. “I’m waiting to look in the cabinet in front of you.”

Scotty didn’t look as though he believed him and David didn’t blame him. All he wanted to do was throw Andrea’s ex-husband out of the store and tell him to never set foot in Sapphire Bay again.

“Could I interest you in a sample of our creamy Victorian fudge? It’s delicious.” Megan held a container of sweet fudge toward Scotty.

“No, thanks. If you see my friend around town, can you call this number?” He pulled a business card out of his pocket. “It would be great to catch up with her.”

“You don’t want me to give her the number so she can talk to you?”

Scotty’s smile slipped. He knew as well as David that Andrea would never talk to him. “I’d prefer to call her. We didn’t leave Portland on good terms.”

David gritted his teeth. Pounding your wife until you broke her ribs would do that to a relationship.

Megan picked up the business card. “In that case, I’ll call you if I see her. Are you sure you don’t want to try some fudge?”

Scotty shook his head. “Maybe another time. Bye.”

“Bye.”

After Scotty had gone, David watched him from the front window.

“What’s going on?” Megan whispered from beside him.

“That was Andrea’s ex-husband. She doesn’t want to see him.” He glanced at Megan. “What made you say you didn’t know her?”

“Call it intuition. Someone tried to find Nora and me a few years ago. If it weren’t for my husband, I don’t know what would have happened to us.”

“I’m glad it turned out okay.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. “Can I leave the cake here for a few minutes?”

“Sure. Where are you going?”

“Wherever Scotty goes. I’ll be back soon.” He stepped onto the sidewalk and sent Tanner a text. If he could find where Andrea’s ex-husband was staying, it would make it easier for the police to serve him the temporary order of protection.

Scotty turned left at the end of the next block.

As soon as David realized where he was going, he broke into a run.

Andrea checked her watch and looked across the heads of Katie and Peter’s wedding guests. She was worried about David. It shouldn’t have taken him this long to collect the cake from Sweet Treats.

Even if Megan was busy serving customers, she knew how important it was to get it back here in plenty of time.

“Who are you looking for?” Vanessa asked.

“David. He should’ve been back by now.”

“He probably got held up at Sweet Treats. They can be really busy on Saturday afternoons. Doesn’t Katie look gorgeous?”

She nodded as Katie repeated her wedding vows. With its long train and sweetheart neckline, the dress was so simple it was stunning.

Andrea thought about her own wedding. It was an over-the-top, extravagant day that she hardly remembered. She was so besotted with the handsome man she was marrying that everything passed in a blur. It wasn’t until the next day that reality set in. Leaving her family behind while she traveled to Portland with Scotty was one of the hardest things she’d ever done.
