“When will it be ready?”

“In about ten minutes. I’m really sorry, but I didn’t know who else to ask.”

“Don’t worry. I’m happy to go into town. Is there anything else you want me to pick up while I’m there?”

Andrea frowned. “If Megan has any long, colorful candy in the store, bring some back with you. We might be able to make a new rainbow from it.”

“Okay.”

“You don’t know how much I appreciate you doing this.”

He kissed the side of her face. “I think I do. If you have time to see Katie and Peter get married, save me a seat. I won’t be too long.”

He checked his pocket for his keys, then made his way out of the inn. After sending a quick text to Pastor John and Ethan, he started his truck and drove into town.

If they saw anyone who looked like Scotty, they’d call the police and keep Andrea safe. All David had to do was pick up the cake and get back to the inn as soon as possible. Even if he was helping to save the wedding cake, it wouldn’t mean as much as seeing his best friend get married.

Chapter 16

“You must be David.”

He smiled at the woman behind the counter. “And you must be Megan. Andrea’s grateful you could decorate another cake.”

“I was happy to help. You wouldn’t believe some of the things that happen to wedding cakes.” She opened a door behind her. “Come on through to the kitchen. I’ve put the cake in a box and it’s ready to go.”

Before he left the retail part of the store, David looked around Sweet Treats. With its wonderful selection of handmade candy, it was one of the most popular stores in Sapphire Bay. “You don’t have any candy Andrea could use as a rainbow, do you?”

Megan looked over her shoulder and smiled. “She told me about the one that broke. When Brooke made the sugar candy rainbow, she had two backups. Luckily for us, she kept them. I’ll show you what I’ve done.”

She walked into the kitchen and opened the cake box. “The first one had more decorations, but I did the best I could.”

Sitting on top of the cake was a candy rainbow surrounded by red, purple, yellow, and orange flowers. He was impressed with what she’d done in such a short time. “It looks great. Thank you.”

“Tell Andrea to call me if she needs help. Sweet Treats will be closed in an hour.”

“I will.” Carefully, he lifted the box off the counter and made his way into the store.

“Wait there. I’ll get the front door for you.” Megan hurried ahead of him. Just as she was about to open the door, a man walked into the store.

A man who looked remarkably like Andrea’s ex-husband.

Megan smiled. “Welcome to Sweet Treats. I’ll be with you in a moment.”

David studied the man’s features. If it wasn’t Scotty, he was close enough to be a relative. “I’ll stay here for a few minutes,” he told Megan. “I wanted to buy some candy.”

She looked confused. “Do you want me to look after the cake?”

He glanced at the box and frowned. He was so surprised to see Scotty that he’d forgotten he was holding it. “It’s okay. I’ll leave it on the counter.”

Megan watched him for a few seconds before turning to the man who’d come into the store. “Can I help you with something special or are you happy to look around?”

“I was hoping you could help me find a friend who’s moved here.”

David stepped closer to the counter. Megan probably didn’t know about Andrea’s ex-husband. If she told him where Andrea lived or where she was today, it could be disastrous for everyone.

“Sapphire Bay is a popular place.” Megan smiled at the stranger. “Who are you looking for?”

The man pulled a crumpled photo out of his pocket. “Andrea Castell, although she might have changed her name to Andrea Smith. She has two boys, Charlie and Andy.”
