My heart is hammering in my chest and I wonder if he can feel it.He is not at all what I expected after his cocky act last night during the party.

I spit out the first thing that pops into my head, I’m sure spurred by what I witnessed.“I’m not doing drugs.”

He barks out a laugh as he takes a step back, his hold on me releasing.“Yeah, I kind of figured.”

He smiles then. And it’s warm and kind and everything I know is going to fuck with my head and heart later.“You’re the only drug I need today, Kitten.”

This time, when he calls me the pet name he seems to have so fondly assigned to me, I don’t mind one damn bit.

I haveno idea what I’m doing with this damn girl, but I can’t seem to bring myself to say goodbye to her.I’m a little shocked at my own actions but fuck it, I’m rolling with it because it’s the best I’ve felt in months.

She makes me feel normal again. She doesn’t seem to give two shits that I’m famous.I love that she tries to take the lead, but is such a natural at being led.

We’re in an Uber on the way to her apartment, both of us quiet, seemingly lost in our own thoughts.I reach over and draw her hand against my palm. Her mouth pulls up into a smile, her fingers folding over mine, fusing them together as she glances over at me.

It’s September in Las Vegas, and still goddamn stifling out, but I only had jeans in my room, so I’m in those and a t-shirt.I had chucks, thank God, so at least I didn’t have to put my boots on.

I threw on a baseball cap and sunglasses, not sure how much of a disguise they’ll act as, but I’m hoping I can get through the day without being recognized.

A few minutes later, we pull into a complex, every damn building looking exactly like the other, the car pulling up to one somewhere in the middle of the maze.

We get out, thank the driver, and she leads me in between two buildings and up a flight of exterior stairs.I remove my sunglasses and slide them into the front of my shirt collar.

She pauses in front of a door then turns to look at me.“It might be messy.I obviously wasn’t expecting to bring-” She scans me from head to toe before continuing.“-you here.”

“I live in hotel rooms six months a year, I’m sure it’s fine.”I reassure her.I could care less if she’s a messy Marvin or neat as a pin.It doesn’t fucking matter. It’s her I’m interested in, not her housekeeping skills.

“Okay, I’m just warning you.”She spins back around and punches a code into the lock on the knob and pushes the door open, her voice raising an octave as she calls out.“Teddy Bear, I’m home.”

What the fuck?

Before I can ask the question, a fluffy furball streaks into the room, purring so loud it sounds like a motorcycle engine, stopping when it reaches her legs.

He’s cute as hell, but I’m hoping he’s the only one.If three more cats show up, I’m out.I did not sign up for single, crazy cat lady.

She bends down and scoops him up, planting several kisses against his forehead as she turns to me.“This is Teddy,” warmth beaming from her.“He’s my roommate.”

I scratch his head, his purring intensifying as he bumps his skull up into my hand.“He’s definitely a friendly little dude.”

“Yep.”She plops another kiss on his head before placing him back on the floor.“He’s a good boy.”

She sweeps a look around her place then glances back at me.“Okay, I’m going to take a really quick shower.”

She points towards a living room area.“You can hang in there, watch something if you want?Help yourself to anything in the fridge.”She frowns as her focus shifts in that direction.“It’s probably pretty sparse.I don’t cook very much.”

“I’m good.”I wave her off.“Go do your thing.”I reach down to swipe the cat out from under her legs and cradle him in my arms.“I’ll hang out with this guy.”

She stares at me a moment, her eyes shifting from the cat in my arms and then back up to my face, wearing an expression I can’t read, before she finally nods.“Okay.I’ll be quick.”

“Take your time.”I call to her as she scurries down a hallway off the kitchen and into a doorway on the right.I saunter around the open space of her apartment, the cat completely content hanging out against my chest.
