Maybe if he was far, far away, surrounded by mountains and wilderness, death wouldn’t find him. Maybe in Montana he could finally put the warrior life behind him and become what he’d always wanted to be. Something simple. Something pure.

A rancher. A healer.

And maybe in Montana, with his past all around him, Lily’s memory would stop fading.

“We should get dressed.” Cami bent to grab her discarded bra from the floor. She was quick to slip it over her shoulders and hook it behind her back. Then she did that delightfully feminine wiggle to adjust her breasts inside the cups.

Seeing that made Doc forget about the Coast Guard. Forget about the wounded men. Forget about his past and the future and death.

Hell, if someone had asked his name, he might not have been able to answer.

All he wanted, all he couldthinkabout, was dragging her back into bed with him and taking her again.

He didn’t realize he’d crawled across the mattress toward her until she lifted a finger and took a step backward. “No, sir. You better stop right there. I recognize that look.”

“What look is that?” he said lowly.

“YourI’m-going-to-eat-you-alivelook.”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought youlikedit when I ate you alive.”

“Dalton!” This time when she blushed, it extended past her cheeks and chest. Her belly pinkened right along with the tops of her thighs.

Enchanting.

Where was that growling coming from?

Oh, right. From me.

She laughed and danced out of his grasp when he made a swipe for her.

“If you run,” he warned, staring at her from beneath his eyebrows. “I’ll just have to chase you.”

Desire darkened her eyes, but she snatched her borrowed T-shirt and boxer shorts off the floor. “I’m serious, Dalton.” She lifted a staying hand. “We have things to take care of. I’m sure the others are wondering where we are.”

“They knowexactlywhere we are.”

“Well, then we’ve shirked our duties long enough. We need to help them with the thieves, and we need to give our accounts of the evening to the Coast Guard so it’s all on record.”

“Ugh. Why do lawyers have to be such spoilsports?”

“I don’t know. Why are libertines so insatiable?”

“Youmake me insatiable.”

He expected her to come back at him with something appropriately saucy, so he was a little disappointed when all she did was hastily step into the shorts. He thought for a moment he saw an expression of…he couldn’t be sure…but it kind of looked likesadnessflitter across her face. Then she pulled the T-shirt over her head and he decided he’d been imagining things.

“Well that’s a crying shame,” he complained when she pulled the white cotton down over her luscious breasts.

She didn’t meet his eyes, simply tossed his shorts and shirt at him. “Clothes, Dalton. Before you put someone’s eye out.” She made a vague gesture toward his nether regions where, once again, he’d grown hard. Although, as soon as she added, “Tonight’s fun and games have come to an end,” he felt himself begin to whither.

Did she have any idea how true those words were?

After they dealt with the thieves and authorities, he’d have to explain to her why this night’s fun and games would have to be theonlynight of fun and games. He’d have to tell her that they were treading treacherous ground, and that it was better to end it early, before anyone got hurt.

If Cami saw the change in his demeanor as he dressed and slipped into his flip-flops, she didn’t say anything. But neither did she reach for his hand when he opened the bedroom door.

They were brought up short when they ran into LT and Olivia escorting the three thieves down the darkened hallway. Both LT and Olivia had their weapons drawn, but neither of them aimed at the men. Instead, they kept their handguns close to their thighs, their trigger fingers resting outside their trigger guards.
