The sounds her mouth and hand made were a little lewd and alotcarnal.
And it wasn’t long before she could feel him getting close. Feel his testicles pulling up tight against his body. Feel his thighs begin to shake.
“Cami!” His voice wheezed out of him. “You have to stop or you’re going to make me—Oh, god!” he croaked because she didn’t stop. Instead, she redoubled her efforts.
“Cami!” His head thrashed against the pillow and his fingers found their way into her hair.
As she pushed him over the edge, tears filled her eyes.
It occurred to her there were occasions in life when the earth stopped spinning on its axis. When time was suspended, and a person could experience an entire existence in a mere moment. Like when a baby was born or when a loved one breathed their last.
Or when she realized that what she had with Doc, she’d never have with anyone else.
Chapter 27
11:41 PM...
“Good lord,” Doc panted as Cami kissed her way back up his body only to curl onto her side with her silky thigh thrown over his and her head pillowed on his chest. Surely she heard how his heart raced. There was no hiding his labored breathing. “You win. Yours is the more talented mouth. Themosttalented mouth. Believe me when I say…day-yum.”
She chuckled and the delicious sound swirled in his ears before traveling south to squeeze his heart. She had the most wonderful laugh. So low and throaty. It made him happy to hear it.
Happy.
Not a word he’d used to describe himself in quite some time.
“This isn’t a competition,” she scolded.
“No?” He absently brushed a hand over his eyes because he wasn’t sure if the candlelight played tricks on him or if he was actually seeing stars.
Seeing stars,he decided when white spangles continued to flash and blink in his field of vision.
“It’s a team sport, remember? And I was just returning the favor, teammate.”
“What did I say about no quid pro quos, woman?”
Before she could answer, a hard knock sounded on the front door and echoed up through the rambling old house. “Coast Guard!” a strident female voice called.
Cami bolted upright, holding the coverlet to her breasts as she glanced around wide-eyed. “Why is the Coast Guard here?”
“Listen.” Doc sat up. “The storm’s passed.” The eerie silence Julia had left in her wake was almost as unsettling as the roar of her mighty winds.
Doc couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed the hurricane had moved on.
Okay, that wasn’t true. Hecouldbelieve it. He’d been...ahem…rather preoccupied.
“Holy shit. You’re right.” Cami blinked, and he clocked how delightful she looked with her lipstick all rubbed away and her hair a mess.
She was usually so put together. Bun perfect. Makeup on point. Clothes just so. Seeing her disheveled turned her from a sleek, sophisticated temptress into an adorable, charming partner in crime. And that hollowness that lived in his center yawned wide at the thought of this being the last time he’d ever see her in such a state.
“They got here awfully quick.” She swung her legs over the side of the bed and glanced around for her clothes.
“I’m sure LT or Uncle John put in a call as soon as the storm passed. The thieves need to go to the hospital and there’s the…uh…” He had to swallow when his voice turned hoarse. “The body to deal with.”
For a few blessed hours he’d been able to forget he’d taken another life. Now the reality of it, the horror of it, came crashing back in.
Why can’t I get away from death? He asked his question to the universe. But, as was its way, the universe was frustratingly silent.
Maybe in Montana…
